Too Much Growth is NOT good.

Jul 26 '00

When we added a German Shepherd Pup to the family we brought home a bag of puppy food to feed him. We thought because the bag said "puppy" that it was the proper diet for our new pup.

Within three weeks the Pup had grown to "dog" size and when we had a vet visit we were sad to learn that the puppy was growing too fast and having hip problems.

Our Vet then explained how important feeding really is to a young puppy. A large breed dog that is fed too rich a dog food product or simply overfed or free fed (as we were doing) will grow faster than their skeleton can handle. He recommended that we put our puppy on Food formulated for Large breeds in the growing period. We also had to feed him measured amounts and on somewhat of a schedule.

At the next checkup the puppy had slowed down his growth rate due to the now proper diet for a young growing large breed dog.

I used to tend to feed any of my family pets "bargain" food. I now see the importance and actually savings in using brand name and properly formulated food that is more expensive. Feeding measured amounts keep the costs down some and we have no waste. The animals seem more satisfied too after getting used to a new feeding schedule.

Out German Shepherd will be healthier for a lifetime because we asked our Vet and have fed him right from his puppy days. Ask your Vet to recommend a diet for your puppy.
