A Happy Ending..!!!!!

Dec 14 '00

Today here where I live in Flint Mi. we are having a snowstorm. We are expecting 8-12 inches, and it looks like we will see that and more. We already have 6 inches in 2 hours.

I have a big, silly German Shepherd named Kalli, and yesterday morning she had a visitor. A small black dog had come to play with her. It looked like a Lab pup by its color and build. When I got home from work last night the pup was gone. But this morning as the snow began to hit, when I went to let Kalli outside, I found this pup again sitting on my porch waiting for her to come and play.

After a while I decided I should let Kalli in as the storm was rapidly increasing , but it broke my heart to leave this pup sitting there on the porch. I took a blanket outside and covered her up and put her in a chair on my porch hoping the owners were looking for her and would still be able to see her. After about 20 minutes I checked on her and she was still in the chair, but snow was blowing over her head and the blanket. My Granddaughter was saying Puppy ! Puppy ! and we felt the same way, It bothered me to have her not be visible to the searching owners but I could not leave her out there in 10 degree weather any longer.

Having seen her the morning before I figured she was hungry so first we gave her some food and warm water. Then I looked her over and found , by her teeth that she was not a puppy at all. I think she was around 2 years old at least and obviously an indoor pet. By the way she took to my Granddaughter it was also apparent she was accustomed to small children. She was just a sweetheart, and we were already planning to keep her if we couldn't find the owners....:)

"Puppy" laid down for a much needed rest with my Granddaughter, and we made some calls. I checked with the trailer park manager and the apt. complexs nearby, with no luck, but left my phone number in case the owners called. Our snowstorm had been upgraded to a blizzard, and chances were someone was looking for this little sweetheart , as I know I would have been Kalli. So the next idea I had was to make FOUND signs and get them to the corner stores and gas stations hoping the owners would question and search them , as riding to look had become impossible with what was being termed a whiteout and visibility was down to 20 feet ahead of you on the roads.

While posting my signs I discovered at one of the stores that indeed a woman had been searching for this dog the evening before and had left a phone number. I headed home feeling like a messenger from God to call this family. When she answered the phone I could immediately hear some children cheering in the background and I cant begin to tell you how great this made me feel. Puppy's name was Tia and she had been missed greatly.

The family lived quite a distance away and had lost her while visiting their Grandma nearby . I wanted to tell her she should have had a collar on this little girl with her name at least , if not tags providing her registration number form her license which is not only by required by law ,but makes locating the owner in a case such as this much easier. She had been lucky in many ways that I would not say , but for the record we couldve kept her as easy as we couldve left her outside and she would not have made it I am sure We are in a state of emergency here now which tells you how bad this storm has gotten and I'm certain many of you pet owners know just how many people woulve helped this dog and this family. The odds are not that great especially under the circumstances we are in .

I am not attempting to pat myself on the back with this story however , I just wanted to share what seemed to me a story with a happy ending and a warning to all pet owners to keep a proper collar and tags on their pet. I have had the misfortune of losing a pet with a sadly different ending and would never wish this on anyone. Also in closing let me add, be especially cautious in bad weather, an inside pet cannot withstand the elements when left to fend for themself. I suggest watching your pet if at all possible and returning them indoors as soon as they have completed their business outside. Obviously when visiting a new territory it is also important to keep a close watch on your friend , they can become lost very quickly .

I am at a loss as to which category to place this review so forgive me if you feel it is in the wrong place . Thanks for reading......Kat
