Clipping your bird's wings
Jul 21 '00
It's always hard for a bird to get it's wings clipped. It knows it won't be able to fly very well, and it might think you are being cruel, so make it feel comfortable.
When clipping your birds wings, it's a good idea to hold them in a small cloth. This minimizes the struggling. The first time I clipped the wings of one of my birds, I didn't do this, and she held her wing up that day and the next like she pulled a muscle. And by no means should you yell or shout at your birds, NO MATTER HOW FRUSTRATED YOU ARE. It's also a good idea to have some powder nearby in case you cut a blood vessel. If in doubt, go to your vet. To prevent an incident like this, cut only the primary feathers.
After you have cut the wings, watch your bird's behavior to make sure it isn't injured. Also make sure that when it is out of the cage it doesn't fall because of it's inability to fly well.
There is a benefit to clipping those wings, you know. I have read that since your bird cannot fly for awhile, it will need to depend on you. This is a good chance for you and your bird to bond, and may help if you are teaching it to talk.
Be careful when clipping your birdie's wings, but don't get anxiety over it!
