Pay less, Pay More

I have three cats at this time. An 8-year-old male tabby (Stormy), a 7-year-old pure white female (Snowy) and a 7-year-old long hair gray and white female (Zoey).
When Snowy and Zoey were 6 months old I decided to get both of them spayed. I called my veterinary to get a price on what they charge. I also called our local low cost spay and neuter clinic to compare prices. At the time I owned 5 cats. I decided to take both my cats to the spay and neuter clinic. I could get both of them taken care of for the price of one cat at my vet. I thought I would be saving money.
I had to have Snowy and Zoey there at 7:00 a.m. and could pick them up late in the afternoon of the same day. As I waited in line to check my cats in, I noticed more and more people coming with their cats. Some in cat carriers, some in boxes, and some in the arms of their owners. There must have been 15 to 20 cats there in the time it took to get mine checked in and more were still coming.
When I went to pick up my babies, I noticed that the area the cats were kept in were just rows and rows of cages. There really wasn’t much to keep the cats separated from each other, just the wire.
A couple of days after they were back home, Snowy started sneezing. Snowy’s sneezing lasted for about 3 days and then went away. About a week later though, all of the other 4 cats had running noises, watery eyes, and were sneezing. One of my cats even had its eye completely closed do to the infection.
I took the cat that was in the worst shape to our veterinary. It had an upper respiratory infection. The vet gave us enough medication for all of the infected cats. The vet bill and the medicine ended up costing me over $100.00. I am happy to report that all of the cats were nursed back to health in no time flat.
I think that a low cost spay and neuter clinic is a very good idea, because with out the clinic there would be many more unwanted kittens born every year. I do believe though that the clinic should take better precautions to keep sick cats away from the healthy cats.
If I had it to do all over again, I would have my cats spayed at our vet. I thought I was saving money by going to the clinic, but in the long run it cost me more. Not to mention, my poor cats had to go though an illness they would not have been exposed to had I have taken them to our vet.
We have used the same vet since I was a kid. When I grew up and got animals of my own I continued to use the same veterinary that my parents use. They have always been friendly, helpful, and take good care of my animals.
I hope when you take your animals to get spayed or neutered you will find this review helpful. I would go with your vet over the spay and neuter clinic.
Now, my husband thinks that you would enjoy a little story about giving the medicine to the 4 cats. So for him I will tell all of you about his baby. Snowy.
As I said before Snowy is the one that started sneezing first, but she was able to fight off the infection on her own. So she didn’t need any medicine, but she is very jealous. Snowy would watch as it took both my husband and myself to give the other cats their medicine. She thought they were getting something that she wasn’t and she wanted some too. After several days of Snowy looking at us like “I want some too.”, we finally cleaned out an eyedropper and gave her some water. The other cats we had to fight with to give them their medicine, but Snowy jumped up into my husband’s arms, threw her head back and opened her mouth. She finally got some of whatever the other cats were getting. She was happy!
