Good Groomer?

There is quite a bit of homework involved when trying to choose a groomer for your cat. Believe it or not it's not as simple as you would think. Would you want to send your children with just anyone? I've been a groomer for 8 years and I would like to share with you the process of finding a qualified groomer that you can trust.
The first step is making a list of all the local groomers in your neighborhood. This is where your people skill's come in handy. Start to call around to differant places and ask questions such as...
1. Am I allowed to stay with my cat for it's first grooming?
The reasonable answer would be of coarse. If they make excuses as to why they don't want you to stay maybe they have something to hide. Being your cat's first time at the groomer, it would be a little more comforting if you were there to. Plus this will also give you time to scope out their atmosphere. Is it clean? Is as much hair off the floor as possible? Do they work as a team in case of emergency? Those are some of the thing you need to look out for when your cat is being groomed.
2. How do you react to a cat if it is totally terrified? Do you have muzzels? or do you tranquilize?
What the groomer should be explaining to you is that if for some reason your cat is extremely uncomfortable they will try muzzels first and then if the cat is to freaked out the will ask your permition to tranquilize.
3. Do you shave around my cat's butt?
There is no nice way to ask that question. This is perticullarly pertaining to the longer haired cats. If you own a long haired cat you know it is extremely hard to keep the poop from sticking to the hair around the butt. The groomer's should be willing to give it their best shot.
4. Do you keep the cat all day?
As far as my opinion goes. There is no reason to keep the animals all day. That is a waste of time and you day is shot waiting for them to call. A normal pet grooming in Ohio usually take's an hour and a half to two hours. Sometime's longer but we will tell you apon arival.
You might have to check out a couple differant groomers before you find one you really like and trust. It's not and easy thing to find but again trust and cleanliness are the most important things to remember. Hopefully this has helped you with the stressfull situation of finding a good groomer.
