Toyota Decision 2005: Tundra vs. Tacoma - And the winner is...

by phungus Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200
Jul 03 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Bigger, better, more power, more comfort
Cons: Can't replace factory stereo yet
The Bottom Line: Toyota has really outdone themselves this year with the new Tacoma.

I recently decided to trade in my 2003 Toyota Tacoma on something bigger and with an automatic transmission. My old Tacoma came with a V6, manual transmission, and had four-wheel drive. In the 2.5 years that I owned it, I only used the 4x4 twice. I ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Good looks & performance, solid construction, comfortable car-like feel
Cons: Color selection and advertising are geared toward juveniles, goofy looking hood scoop (Sport model)
The Bottom Line: I wanted a high-quality, reliable mid-sized truck I can live with everyday—this is it!

After 13 years it was time to trade in my 92’Chevy S10 for a new vehicle. Because I took good care of it, the S10 was a great little truck. However, I wanted an upgrade to some modern conveniences and a more sophisticated drive train. For a long time ...

"The Practical Truck"

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Composite Bed Simple Yet Practical Interior Bold Styling Bigger Engine Locking Rear Differential
Cons: Electronic Transfer Case Tires
The Bottom Line: A great practical truck. I rated it low because of the squeakiness and the lack of room in the back in the access cab.

"The Practical Truck" Let me first start off by saying that I am a very lucky 17 year old who has been given a unique opportunity to drive a new 2005 4X4 Toyota Tacoma each day. I am currently helping run a logging operation so I spend lots of time ...

Pros: Strong engine, plenty of room, nice interior, good price.
Cons: Gas mileage, potential paint problems
The Bottom Line: I recommend this truck to any and everyone.

I recently traded my 2004 Nissan 350Z for a 2005 Tacoma Pre-Runner V6 with the SR5#3 package. This package comes with all the basics that I was looking for, power windows, power locks, keyless entry, cruise control, and fog lamps. It has a few other ...

Not all is improved

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Much improved Ride and Power. More Room. Same Gas Mileage.
Cons: No Double Cab, Long bed, Manual Transmission option. Cheesy Dashboard. 4WD controls are unpredictable.
The Bottom Line: It is a good quality vehicle with noticeable improvements in the power and handling departments. There are irksome designs changes that detract from this.

I bought the access cab, TRD off road based on previously owning a 2003 Tacoma and loving it. It has noticeably more power. It's wider. The ride is dramatically improved. The Synthetic bed should be a joy to not worry about. The suicide access doors are ...

Aug 20 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Toyota's reliability, size and beefy look is an absolute winner.
Cons: The gas mileage isn't better than 20 to 25 mpg.
The Bottom Line: Buy it if you want one of the best midsize trucks built because Toyota is reliable and sound.

I have been looking at the Toyota Tacoma PreRunners for about two years on e-bay waiting for the right truck to come along. I had no intention of buying a new truck due to the loss in value as you drive it off the lot. But the more I searched and saw ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Build quality, power, handling.
Cons: Stock stereo, untested composite bed, weird side-mirrors take getting used to.
The Bottom Line: I recommend this truck to anyone looking for a classy, quality built, and semi-sporty truck.

After realizing that our 2002 Buick Rendezvous would be suffering from reliability issues in the next few thousand miles, and seeing our need for a vehicle with more cargo capacity, we began researching mid-size pickups. We looked at the Nissan Frontier, ...

Vast Improvement over Previous Tacoma Model Years

Jan 02 '05 - Updated Jan 04 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Smooth Ride, Good Power, Silky smooth auto trans with nice layout
Cons: Engine noise, no power seats w/ height adjustment, no navi or sunroof, no memory seats
The Bottom Line: I do recommend this vehicle although there is room for improvement. Most improvements are in the area of amenities. But, Toyota NEEDS to fix the engine noise problem.

I've had my 2005 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 Short Bed Automatic in Radiant Red for about a week and I'm liking it more by the day (unlike my 02 Tacoma which I disliked more by the day). I've had Toyota trucks for most of my adult life and have been disappointed ...

Pros: Aggressive body styling, user friendly interior, cab space, quality JBL sound system, under/behind seat storage.
Cons: Warranty??? Leaf springs??? Plastic bed liner.
The Bottom Line: Buy it. Quality truck. Watch the suspension!

Let me start by saying I love this truck. I picked up the '05 Tacoma four door, long bed after my Nissan four door, long bed became too small for a family with a car seat riding child (too short in the cab area.) I picked up my Tacoma in the evening ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Engine, better than expected gas mileage, bed, styling, interior quality, size.
Cons: Paint is falling off, service concerning paint problems, options packages (no XM for access cab).
The Bottom Line: Near perfect for me except for major problem. If I had to do over, I would probably choose Frontier or F-150.

I bought an 05 Tacoma after carefully researching my purchase. It was narrowed down to Tacoma or the new Frontier. I picked the Tacoma for the reputation for quality, styling, interior, etc. Basically I was willing the spend the 5-8k extra for a ...

great quality truck for the money

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Great quality truck, sharp looking, great features, smooth ride
Cons: gas mileage falls short, keyless entry should honk horn when locking
I just traded in my 2001 Chevy Silverado for my first Toyota Tacoma and let me say it is a sharp truck and well made. I am satisfied with most every feature. I wish the gas mileage was a little better (16 mpg city) but I do tend to get aggressive at times so some of that may be my fault. I do wish they had a bed light. I can't believe a 4x4 without a light in the truck bed. And I wish the remote keyless entry would honk the horn when locking the truck. It's nice to lock while walking away and hear the horn blow letting you know it is locked. Besides these 2 small glitches so far it's a great truck and sporty too!

MY TACOMA IS A LEMON. IS YOURS??

Pros: looks good before you actually drive it
Cons: horrible paint, horrible service, horrible repair technitions, Horrible I spent 35,000 on a LEMON.
15,000 on the odometer. 2005 dbl cab silver trd sport 4x4 . never left the highway. Chipping all over the entire truck. The 6sp manual transmission has a great habit of "popping" out of gear at random times. TOYOTA will do nothing, and admits no Fault for the paint. don't buy this truck. www.tacomalemon.com

Great Truck

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Gas mileage, off road capabilities - MOAB passed most class 4 trails without problems.
Cons: Arm rest in doors need padding, oil changes need 4ft tubing from filter.
Just what I was looking for in a truck. I have 2 children and the car seats fit great in the back. I wasn't looking for a "huge truck" due to gas milage and this truck delivered, 23mpg hwy and 19 city with a snug top on the back. The only concern I have had so far is the arm rest on the doors needs more padding, everything else fits great.

Very Impressed

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Style, Torque, Composite Box, Roominess
Cons: Cheaper cloth interior, plain standard stereo
I bought a 2005 4-door Tacoma about 2 weeks ago and have been really impressed with this vehicle. I've driven it mainly in the city and it handles quite well for a larger sized truck, but also took it on a weekend road trip and it was magic on the highway.

My purchase was the 6-speed manual, and my one complaint with this is that I wanted the 6-foot box, but the manual is only sold with the 5-foot box for some reason. I am getting some after-market racks to put on though which should negate my cargo issues.

So far gas mileage is adequate. I'm getting about 500km per 70L. Not great, but not bad either. The manual transmission is tons of fun to go through as well. 6th gear at 70km/h (40mph) is no problem.

My one issue is that I got the SR5 Power package (middle package offered) and am pretty unimpressed with the cloth seats. The ones offered on the TRD package are way nicer and I think for the money you pay for a Tacoma, these upgraded seats should be standard on all models.

Reasonable truck

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No
Pros: Good looking truck, strong drive train and excellent interior.
Cons: Poor economy, very cheap paint quality, lots of squeaks and rattles shortly after new.
I like my truck but it isn't the greatest truck of all time. It gets much poorer mileage than the EPA estimate. If I featherfoot it, I get 14 MPG in town. The suspension has developed many squeaks after only 10K miles. I beat my Ranger to death for 135K miles and never got one rattle or squeak. I know Toyota has a sterling reputation, but I have owned Fords and Hondas with far superior quality of construction and design. One thing that struck me was how cheap the quality of paint is on this thing. Paper thin and chips very easily. Not good for a working truck! I must say that the interior is awesome with the neoprene seats. The drivetrain is superior as well. It has gotten me out of some sticky situations that I know my Ford Ranger would have not gotten out of. This truck is also beautiful to look at. If I were buying a truck today I would get a Honda Ridgeline.
