Pros: Good Features, Quality And Ease of Use For Under $200 Cons: None That I Could Find!
If you haven't yet, you really should make the switch from VHS to DVD! For those that are already familiar with DVD players, but just need a new one then look no further because JVC won't dissapoint you with the XV-NP1SL! The XV is an affordable, ...
Pros: great feature set and price Cons: unfortunately, design is flawed and build is atrocious
I've had good luck on electronics over the years. This DVD player was a surprising exception. I chose the JVC because of the very strong feature set and brand name. Summary: great feature set but player is likely not to work. I wanted a DVD ...
Pros: plays music CDs well, has cdrw/mp3/divx functionality Cons: video pauses and/or pixellates without warning, plastic insert for memory stick required for use
Paid $100 for this POS at Best Buy (on sale from $130). I had my inhibitions about buying JVC, and this experience has just confirmed them--never again! I thought since they claimed it was better than lower priced models quality-wise, that we'd be ok ...
Pros: Plays media from various memory cards and can zoom & pan JPEG images. Slick looking. Cons: Too many to list in 15 words! See main review.
I didn't find this machine to be a good value at $93 + tax. It seems to have been designed with haste and minimum attention to detail. The setup menus offer surprisingly few customization options and the GUI looks crude. The projecting buttons on the ...
Pros: DIVX Ability. MANY Features for Money, Slim Design. Remote. Picture Quality. Cons: Hard to Find some areas. Try to Buy New!
Well I am not saying this is the best JVC player ever made, the first came from BB, and had to be exchanged. Now on the second, it has had no troubles. That problem I have found all to common with any brand. Design is trendy, has many picture ...
Pros: Plays everything it says it will.
Cool blue display light on dvd. Cons: No backlight on remote control.
After awhile it will not play burned dvd's
The player seemed to play anything that you put in it(burned dvds)--- at first. After about a year, eventually the player would play about half through a burned dvd then it would blur up or stop playing. Seemed like the player is about to die out. But if your not playing to many burned dvds then this player is awesome.
Rich feature list but poor quality by imcatamney ,May 29 '05
Pros: Multi format including DivX, able to read memory cards Cons: Too many but worst is the out of synch video and audio on DVD playback
I bought this player because of the Divx playback. However, I am very disappointed with the poor picture and sound quality. The worst problem though with this player is that the audio and video are out of synch on DVD playback. I have seen other reviews mention this as well so this is not a one-off problem.
Pros:
- Plays divx, Mpeg4, MP3 and WMA
- Reads all types of memory cards
- Was able to read a disk that other DVD players had trouble reading
- Divx video quality quite good despite some minor annoyances
Cons:
I didn't think that it was possible to have large differences in picture and sound quality between DVD players but here it is very, very noticeable when compared to my old, cheap Panasonic. The deal breaker though is the out of synch audio and video. Unforgivable in my opinion.
Pros: plays mp3 nicely. read my cf cards perfectly. reads dvd /-r/w. Cons: wont play divX. problems with chapter breaks. a/v sync sucks
jvc sucks. i have a jvc surround reciever that does not have a bias trim pot on the center channel amp, so they could save a couple cents per hundred units. this made the center channel so distorted, it is unusable.
for some reason, i bought the xv-np10s thinking it would be a good player, since it is jvc's top model in that line. wrong.
i only got it to play very small divX files. any full cdr movies (i tested a lot of discs) just lock up with "reading index" on the screen. i have to unplug the unit to unfreeze it.
with regular dvds, the colors are washed out. the audio video sync is off, and continues to get worse as the movies progress. also, it doesnt handle chapter breaks very well. it pauses on every chapter for a few seconds, usually getting pixelated and sometimes skips ahead a little. sometimes the movies just lock up.
jvc's products are poorly designed, and poorly tested.
i also have a jvc tv that leaves a lot to be desired.
buy a different dvd player. im returning mine.
Decent player for the money by aaronjb ,Feb 05 '05
Pros: Plays MOST divx/xvid movies, menus, while they can be slow, are intuitive and lucid. Cons: Picky divx/xvid decoder, unattractive remote, slightly slow menus.
I was originally looking for the Philips DVP642, however stupid Best Buy didn't have any in stock anywhere, however they had three of these, two of which were open box. So I got mine for $80. So far, it plays quite a bit of stuff that I've thrown at it for Divx & Xvid encoding, and I haven't had any problems with the movie aspect of it at all.
The design is nice, pleasing to the eye. The remote is a little less aesthetically pleasing, but it serves it's purpose. The included A/V cables are only about 2.5 feet long, so don't anticipate much there either. Overall, if you can find one for ~$80-90, I would recommend it, if not, then order the Philips online and have it shipped.
Overall, good enough for government work, but not jaw dropping.
Pros: Good picture quality. Decent feature set. Remote control is OK. Cons: Menu freezes
Momentary freeze between chapters.
Overpriced for its quality.
I have had bad luck with DVD players. We bought this one because our previous DVD player wouldn't display subtitles correctly - they would remain on the screen until the next set of subtitles appeared. This was very annoying on movies where the subtitles were infrequent. Anyway, this one plays okay, but momentarily freezes every once in a while, presumable between chapters. But the biggest complaint that I have with this unit is that it hangs up in the DVD menus. The background of the menu will appear; however you are not able to navigate to the different menu choices. This is extremely annoying on movies with many layers of menus because you have often have to go back to the Title Menu and start over again. And then it will mess up again on the same or a different menu layer.
Pros: It can read digital photo disks Cons: Not worth calling a DVD player
Bought this model at Best Buy and Couldnt watch a movie without the video stalling at least 4 times. Took the player back to the store and they swapped it out for another unit, same make and model. The second unit reacted exactly the same. It is going back tomorrow to be swapped for a completely different brand.
Pros: Plays DIVX/.avi's!!! Cons: Plastic adapter for reading memory sticks.
I own two different models of JVC DVD players. I have been very happy with both of them. This model is more then capable of playing all DVD formats on the market today...This unit also plays DIVX, .avi's, .asf's .jpeg's,and SVCD's. You name it and this unit plays it. Watch for sales though, I found it on sale for 99 dollars, and it came with three free DVD Movies.
UPDATE:
After having this unit for a few months now, I can tell you OVERALL it's a great player. I would definitely purchase it again! My only complaint is the card reader; its very difficult to get cards in and out of the machine, especially out. Try getting a XD memory card out of the card reader once you've finished viewing it...I needed to use a pair of tweezers. Personally I think it would be a better machine; and more durable, if they did away with the card reader on it all together.
