Pros: Records both +/- formats, can replay disks on other players, competitive price Cons: Can't set recording options directly through front panel controls
I purchased the Lite-On LVW-5006 about a week ago from a Radio Shack retailer for the regular retail price of $250. My interest in a DVD recorder was to download and archive movies, concerts, & other special TV programming from a cable TV decoder/DVR. ...

Pros: Ease of Use; Media recording options; DV-IN for duplicating video recordings Cons: Manual is a little sketchy of advanced features
The other reviews are fairly comprehensive. I have just a few things to add. I bought the device a few weeks ago after being very disappointed with a $169 model from Wal-Mart. It was finicky about what brand of media it would accept, and difficult to ...

Pros: It would be a great machine if they could solve the drive failure. Cons: Not worth the headaches and frustration. Worst experience I have ever had.
When I first purchased this machine, I thought it was the greatest thing since VCR'S. The machine worked flawlessly. I was able to record my TIVO contents to DVD to preserve them forever or for 3 months, which ever comes first. All the hype of ...

Disaster

Pros: The tv listings display OK if you leave it turned off except to check. Cons: One failure after another. No service or support. No value.
Bought for Christmas 2005, worked OK only about 3 weeks. Then one by one, things stopped working. First, it refused to record on DVD-R disks (only RW disks), Then it even stopped recording on RW disks. Then it even stopped playing DVDs from other sources - DVDs that still played fine in other players. I downloaded new firmware - no help at all. I misplaced my receipt so Sears won't take it back, even though they admit I must have bought it there since it is on my credit card bill. From what I have read, nobody can fix it - not even Lite-on. Credit card co only warrants against theft or damage, not defects. This is a total loss for me.

Pros: Nice Video and Audio Cons: None
It is clear to see that many of the people reviewing this product is unaware of its intended use. This machine is a great unit and shines when re-recordable media is used for the initial burn. (ie: Hint-It came with a "Re-recordable" disk in the box.
Once recorded on this type of media, move the disk to your computer and use a program like DVDShrink to get the data ready for burning to the final disk. The video and audio are excellent when used as intended. Yes, it will record directly to once write disk, but you risk losing a disk due to several things.
Signal loss, technical problems at the station etc. If you use re-recordable media, you can simply erase it and catch the movie at a later time. Take the hint. Use the same type of media supplied with the machine and it will work a whole lot better.
I've had mine and recorded over 500 movies error free and its still going.

A very versatile machine

Pros: Ease of use, versatility, sound + picture quality Cons: None so far!
I bought a Liteon-5006 in August 2005 price £129.99,
I found it very easy to set up and had ample input and output sockets. The Quality of Record + playback is superb,I've hooked mine up to a surround sound system and it really excels,it records on a wide variety of discs and will even record on to CD's which I found very useful for recording radio stations etc off the internet and archiving my vinyl record selection to CD's which I can play in the car. price wise it is excellent value for money and has many features which other pricier DVD recorders don't, in fact I liked it so much that I went out and bought another one for upstairs!!.I've recorded on DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW and it produced excellent results. It is very simple to use and up to yet very reliable.
