Black ink jet constantly clogging
by mranal ,Mar 21 '04
Pros: Great quality prints for the first 5 pages Cons: Black ink is nothing but trouble.
This printer was awesome for the first week but has since given me nothing but grief. The black jet always needs to be cleaned after 5 pages are printed. I contacted Epson and they were more than willing to ship me a new one (great service). However, once I started printing on the replacement unit, the same exact problem happened. Clearly, this model is a lemon!

Clogged!
by sparknut ,Jun 30 '05
Pros: Prints good pictures and text Cons: Cloggin up constantly!
When the printer works, it works very well.
But the ink jets tend to clog - and it uses a lot of expensive Epson ink to clean, clean and clean again.
On my printer one color is completely clogged and even after dozens - yes, dozens, of cleaning cycles, it will not work.
I've owned several Epson printers. This will be my last one.

Inexpensive and reliable printer
by kywriter ,Jan 27 '04
Pros: You can't beat the price; good quality on printing Cons: A bit loud at startup
Although a bit noisy, the printer produces clean text and sharp photos. A real bargain for the money. The printer can handle 8x10 photos and is relatively quick.

Not too shabby - for the price!
by grinch6 ,Jan 21 '04
Pros: Cheap, decent photos on Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper Cons: Text prints pretty shabby, regardless of paper stock.
If you're in the market for a "decent" printer under $100.00, this one's it.
However, I run a graphic design firm and this printer isn't cutting it. I've been through two (2) exchanged printers with EPSON and they all have the same problem: if it sits too long with the power on without printing, the jets clog and they you're hosed. You'll then need to spend about 5-6 sheets of paper cleaning and realigning the ink jet heads.
I'm pretty bummed about the Mac OS X margin restrictions, mainly losing 1/2" of image area at the bottom of the page. I'm now in the market for a full-bleed 11 x 17 printer.
In short, I've compared EPSON printers to Cannon printers. EPSON has the superior ink by far, although the printers seem to use up a lot of ink. I'd recommend this if you're printing photos. Don't depend on the text quality being too predictable.
Secret: When you're not using it... turn the power off! You'll save your ink in the long run by not having to waste it on cleaning passes and head realignments.

Print heads always need cleaning
by mwitthoft ,Aug 30 '04
Pros: Prints photos well, once you get the @#$# print heads clean Cons: Requires LOTS of "print head cleaning" over and over
I don't use the printer that often. I guess it dries out and clogs when it's not used steadily. Every time I try to print, the output is streaky and thin. I have to do the "clean print heads" thing about six times (no exxageration! a single "clean print heads" does not work) before it'll print a decent image.

epson=crap
by ks2cents ,Jul 29 '04
Pros: its a printer Cons: jams, ink heads constantly jam, loud, a mimeograph is an improvement over this thing
I have had this little baby now for a couple of years, it replaced my 640. Yes, I made the mistake twice. This little gem jams constantly on greeting card paper. It likes to throw tantrums and jam inks too. I have even resorted to using the same cleaning solution epson does (bought it from maxpatch.com) to fix this when it happens. And it is LOUD, the neighbors wake up when the thing starts to print and the house shakes back and forth (just kidding, but close to the truth). Listen, dont waste your hard earned cash on this dog, buy an HP, at least with an HP you get a new printhead everytime you buy a new ink cartridge. I also heard that cannons were good. This is my second and last epson, would take one if it were free (which I have seen them close to lately) remember with epson, you get what you pay for.

Follow the instructions
by jdhagin ,Apr 29 '04
Pros: Very high quality prints, it is a photo printer. Cons: Could be faster, but it is a low cost photo printer.
The 820 is a great photo printer for the cost. It produces photo prints that are almost and very close to continues tone. The problems I have seen on this review page are because the instructions are not followed: 1. download the latest drives from Epson, and 2. as for clogging of the print heads, clean as directed, up to four times, if that doesn't work, turn the printer off and let is sit over night, and sometimes, I have found that printing a photo in the best photo, turning of high speed off takes care of clogging. The most important thing is to turn the printer off at night. I have used Epson Cartridges, and OEM Cartridges and they all work. I have used Epson Photo Papers, most likely the best for quality, but have also used, Kodak, Ilford, etc. and they all work great once things are fine tuned in the advanced settings and photo editing programs.

Maintenance nightmare
by rivergater ,Jan 11 '04
Pros: Decent quality Cons: Chronic clogged jets are annoying
I don't use this printer much, maybe once every two weeks.
But everytime I use it, I have to run maintenance on it to unclog the jets. Its very annoying and wastes a lot of ink.

Crappy value
by cassius75 ,Dec 15 '03
Pros: They say it has the best or better print quality Cons: Expensive cartridges that run out after minimal use - that's how they make their money
This is my second Epson printer, and I'm still disappointed. My mom's been dealing with home computers since I was 10 (about 18 years ago) so she's used to dealing with all the hills and valleys of getting a printer to work with a Mac, namely an HP printer. Since I have no patience for such things, I always ended up getting an Epson for my Mac because it's so much more easily recognized. Well, no more. She bought me one of each color and black inkjet cartridges in July, and by October I'd used it like TWICE and the color was ALREADY failing. I don't think that's good value for the $60-80 I'm sure she spent on them. I think Epson is an inferior product, and like somebody else said, LOUD. The warm-up process is so nerve-grating that I find myself wanting to throw it out the window. Well, I've now gotten a laser printer and a 3-in-1 from HP for a total of $240 (laser printer on sale and 3-in-1 was refurbished from OfficeMax) so look forward to my glowing review of printer products I've had nothing but the best experiences with at work!

Beautiful prints... once in a blue moon
by liftin ,Nov 14 '04
Pros: great resolution and color Cons: Impossibly moody, ink-greedy, cloggy, paper-misfeed-prone
You can get wonderful images out of this machine, once in a while. In between you are running cleaning cycles. You are restarting the print queue when the paper misfeeds. You are replacing the cartridges. This is a moody, hard-to-please beast. You could NEVER put a stack of paper in it, run a few pictures and come back later to a stack of prints. It will never happen

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!
by appleboyswife ,Feb 12 '04
Pros: Great prints! Self cleaning! Can find ink cheap! Cons: Doesn't let you print when its below a certain percentage of ink.
My husband and I bought Epson Stylus Photo 820 Ink-jet Printer thinking that it would get us buy for a short time but little did we know! Can't believe the deal we got on it and definately cannot believe the use we have gotten out of it.
Printer is great! Prints good photos and the ink lasts for quite awhile. At first we thought the ink was expensive to buy but then we found a website that we can get the cartridges for 3.00 a piece if you buy in bulk, which we do.
My husband does advertising on the side and believe it or not, this is the printer he uses!
One of the best things about this printer is that it is self cleaning. If you print several pages it will stop and clean itself before proceeding! How wonderful is that?!

You've gotta be kidding!
by smasonnc ,Dec 01 '03
Pros: none Cons: Nozzles clog constantly, sucks ink, poor output
Whoever gave this printer a good review must work for Epson. This is by far the worst printer I have ever had or know of. It sucks ink and unfortunately, that's not all that sucks about this printer. I bought it because WinXP doesn't support my 8-year-old HP, a workhorse that never failed. I have had constant problems with the Epson, first the nozzles clog constantly and it takes lots of ink to unclog them. The ink cartridges are small and pricey, usually lasting a matter of weeks. The output is blotchy unless you use Epson's overpriced paper, then it is not great, but better.
Right now, I have just put in $50 worth of Epson brand ink cartridges which my printer will not recognize. Therefore, it reports that there is no ink and will not print. Should you even be able to find their tech support it is worthless. They suggested by autoresponder that if the printer was still in warranty they'd send me a new one. I don't want a new one...I don't even want this one. I just want one that works. I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER EPSON PRINTER!!!

huge disappointment
by lowegirl ,Oct 26 '03
Pros: Price Cons: speed, noise, supply cost
It looked like a printer that would produce quality photo images for a reasonable price.
The images were fair, but the printer was unbelievably slow, was noisy, and was an ink-hog (likely due to the frequently maintenance required due to clogged nozzle).
When a part broke during routine cartridge replacement at 15 months of purchase, I was relieved to replace the whole darned thing.

Not worth the money, time, effort, etc.
by rbrong ,Jan 02 '04
Pros: The rare good print. Cons: Ink hog, expensive cartridges, slow, noisy, poor engineering, clogs, clogs, clogs, clogs.
This printer had problems from the day it came out of the box. The included ink were gone in a matter of days due to the need to clean the print head almost immediately. The printer is defective and Epson should quit selling it - even if it is now under $100. It isn't worth it! On the rare occasion we could get a print to come out without missing colors then I was impressed. The jubilation only lasted a for a few more prints until the thing clogged again.
After I finally said... (fill in your own colorful metaphor) I set the printer aside and bought a Canon i960 (very high ratings so far). I just took the Epson apart to take a peek inside to see if I could at least make a respectable back up printer. All I can say about the design and engieering is, "cheap, cheap, cheap."
Bottom line: don't waste your money. Spend a few extra bucks and get a printer with better ratings (there are many).
