The Samsung DVD-V4600 is a Lightweight DVD/VCR Gem!

by Ironcladd Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Sep 06 '04
Pros: Lightweight, inexpensive, DVD/VCR combination features.
Cons: None really.
The Samsung DVD-V4600 is a DVD/VCR Gem! by James Zaworski Electronic technology seems to just get better and better, and less and less expensive. I can’t believe how slim and lightweight electronic technology items are getting. This ...

Ugh, what a pain!

by rookshark , Jan 16 '06
Pros: price, basic functions work well
Cons: no ff/rewind in DVD? Programing recording functions not as good as it should be.
We received this DVD/VCR combo for Christmas a year ago, and although it is nice to finally have a DVD player for the TV (I could watch the few DVDs we had before that on our computer), it has not been without its many faults. First, what does it do ...

Below-Average DVD Player

by nagyovafan , Aug 07 '05
Pros: DVD and VCR
Cons: Frustrating controls and interface
After the old DVD player broke, my dad bought th Samsung DVD Player / VCR Combo. I wasn't crazy about the decision, but it didn't really matter. A DVD player is a DVD player right? Wrong. My biggest beef with the player is the mega-frustrating ...

Inexpensive DVD/VCR combo but won't copy to VHS

by jvolzer , Sep 30 '04
Pros: Price, good layout on remote, front inputs, short height
Cons: can't copy from DVD to VHS
My old VCR finally died. I've been recording our home videos to DVD, so I thought a VCR/DVD combo would be a good idea anyhow so that I could copy from DVD to tape when I wanted to send something from my home video CD's to grandparents who don't have a ...

I should have read the reviews!
by adnilnworb ,Mar 07 '07
Pros: Inexpensive, compact.
Cons: DVDs get stuck and the fast forward-back system is terrible.
This product was bought because we only had a VCR and wanted a DVD player. The combo seemed perfect, although I hated to waste a perfectly good VCR layer. Admittedly, it seems our DVD-V4600 DVD Player/VCR combo has lasted longer that those in the reviews, probably a year, during which time the DVD has gotten stuck twice. We unscrewed the casing, fiddled with the unit and managed to release it. Now, however, no amount of fiddling helps. The DVD is really stuck. Another problem mentioned my others is the fast forward button. I am not a moron and understand that holding it down allows it to move forward (or backward) slowly, but it still skips large amounts of footage, and it's impossible to go back a few seconds to catch what was said the way you can with a VCR. We will not buy another Samsung.

I should have done my homework
by rmorgan ,Dec 04 '05
Pros: Light, nice styling, good picture, full selection of inputs and outputs, low price.
Cons: This particular model is famous for early DVD player failure.
My fault. I should have done my homework before buying the V4600, but our regular VCR suddenly died and this was sort of an emergency. It looked fine at Circuit City, and worked great the first 6 to 8 months. Then the DVD side stopped working. Later, after checking out some "consumer reviews" type web sites, I realized that early DVD player failure in the V4600 is extremely common. Sigh. Money down the drain.

My DVD's are freezing up, too, now
by furies ,Oct 01 '05
Pros: Good "combo" concept, nice styling
Cons: Reliability over time not its strong suit
Like many of you, I'm sure, what attracted us to this unit was the promise of a compact and convenient transition from tape to DVD. As our prior standalone units both failed around the same time, this seemed a perfect solution.

Now, sad to say, the DVD side of the unit is acting unreliably - and today, with two young kids running a fever and bored out of their minds, a DVD failure would be catastrophic. (Why, they may be forced to go outside and play!)

I certainly can't bash this unit or manufacturer any more than the others (I've had Akai's, JVC's, and Sanyo's all die a premature death.), but I'm not convinced that a higher priced unit will necessarily give you better reliability. We're in the era of disposable consumer electronics, and this model is no better or worse than any of the others.

Piece of junk - stay away. No fast forward/reverse.
by pwrshift ,Jun 30 '05
Pros: Looks good - don't let looks deceive you.
Cons: poor audio recording on VHS, bad tracking, no fast fwd/rvs
For sure this is a piece of junk. The remote is hard to use and doesn't even allow fast forward/reverse, only skip. VHS audio is terrible and worse when played on other machines. The tracking is automatic - which means it automatically doesn't work and there's no way to adjust it which is often needed with older tapes on other machines. I should have read epinions before buying - wasted $70. This is the second Samsung product I've had - the other was a fax machine and it too was junk, so they made a fool of me twice. Unit looks nice - and more compact than having two units, but forget Samsung as a make, as the other reviews tell you.

DVD player didn't last 3 weeks!!!
by hotmommaof2 ,Jan 27 '05
Pros: VCR is great. Easy to program my shows to be recorded.
Cons: DVD player stopped working in less than 3 weeks. Menu was very hard to use.
I have only had this unit for NOT EVEN 3 weeks and the DVD player stopped working. I have only used the DVD player maybe 4 times since I bought it. I would get sound but no picture. Tested it on more than one TV and got the same result. VCR still works great. I will be spending more money on the next one. This one is going to back tomorrow....

Samsung DVD-4600 DVD player broken
by kar442 ,Jan 05 '05
Pros: simple set up, price.
Cons: poor quality, poor manufacturing
Purchased as a gift for my wife 5/2004. Played somewhat infrequently (less than 2x/month). Regular use over the '04 holiday season and now the DVD will not play anything. Does not play all of the advertised formats either. Had a rented DVD stuck in it but managed to get it open after fussing with it. Buy something else. Either separate devices or a different unit than this one. These things should last for years, this unit only lasted 7 months with intermittent usage. Poor quality.

Second try still a failure
by velvetboo ,Nov 02 '04
Pros: great for the first few months
Cons: stops working
This is my second round with the Samsung DVD V4600. I bought the first one less than a year ago as a Christmas present to myself. A few months later the DVD player stopped working so I exchanged it. Well here it is a few months later, my warranty expired and I have a non-working DVD player, a working VCR and a rented DVD stuck no less. Customer support said I could mail it to them.... Sony here I come. Don't waste your money on crap.

A fine machine - not worthy of these complaints
by lola818 ,Jul 15 '05
Pros: reliability, price, features
Cons: no volume feature
While some who have written complaints may have had a legitimate "lemon" or two, the large majority of complaints registered here are simply user error. I know this machine inside and out - purchased one for my 84 year old grandmother and one for myself so I could assist her over the phone in learning how to use it. The machine does everything it should and does it all fine. There is a fast forward & rewind, it's a difference of holding down or pressing that button. Programming is not that difficult once it's learned and the one-button 30/60/90/120 minute recording feature is quite handy. The machine is just not worthy of these one-star ratings so I hope to even out the mix.

DVDs Hanging
by dogmom623 ,Jan 16 '06
Pros: Inexpensive; dual DVD/VCR function
Cons: Frequent hanging of DVDs; unreliable; remote difficult to use
Since shortly after we purchased the V4600, any DVD we play in it will hang - multiple times - during play. Sometimes, it will hang completely and we have to eject and start over. Once or twice, it has failed to recognize that a disc is in the machine.

One temporary solution has been to use compressed air to blow out the DVD slot. The DVD compartment also seems to get very warm, and tends to hang less when it is cooler.

We thought about sending it back to Samsung for repair, but because the cost was so low initially and because it's a challenge to disconnect our video/tv equipment due to location, we decided to live with it until the DVD side either dies or gets so bad we can't tolerate it, then just purchase another brand...probably a standalone DVD instead of a dual deck.

My Samsung Works Great
by solive1 ,Aug 11 '05
Pros: Picture and audio Menu options
Cons: Setting it up was a little difficult
I just recently bought the Samsung V4600 even after reading the reviews. I just want to say that my Samsung works great. I didn't even need to read the directions. The menu option are easy to navigate even for morons.

The sound and picture quality are great. I also have a Samsung TV that works perfectly fine. The reviews are people who should have bought warranty's, I did.

Good DVD/VCR Combo
by dvd_usa ,Jul 10 '05
Pros: it plays basically all the discs that I put in and this is exceptionally quiet
Cons: Had no problem with it at all!!
I've had this for over an year, and this product didn't give me any problems at all. Reading some of the reviews before me, I feel very different from them. Because, my DVD player and VCR player worked fine for over a year, plus DVD works great, nothing gets stuck, and someone said that it only allows skip, but that is not true, it allows rewind and fast forward in many different speeds (x2,x4,x8,etc.). Also, someone said that it didn't play mp3-CD's, but mine plays any kind of CD's including mp3-CD's and DVD's no matter what.
My VCR works great, it is very very quiet and it doesn't make any noises when playing compared to my past Sony VCR. It rewinds and fast forwards in very fast so there is really no waiting time. This product is great!
