I have this boombox for couple of weeks, and so far I like it. Befor buying it, I tested several other mp3 boomboxes, in Bestbuy and circuit city, and to me this one has the best sound and features, no tape, but who's using tapes these days...

I purchased this unit for $62.99 5/27/05. I have only used the FM radio feature. The sound surprised me. I am impressed. Apparently this model is being discontinued and the one that looks similar listed for $129.99. Not sure what the differences are and the increased price. I am very happy with the product and the price I paid.

Bought the unit. Disappointed that it would only play mp3's that are created by the software that comes with the unit. That meant I had to convert existing mp3's to the ATRAC version. But I got over that. 6 months after buying the product the CD drive stop spinning and I got the error "No Disc" when putting a brand new commercial cd into the drive. Stuff happens so I called the warranty department at Sony. Labor warranty runs out at 90days. Parts 1 year. Can't get parts without labor. They wanted $32 to exchange a product six months after I bought it (30% of the retail price and twice that to get it repaired). That doesn't sound like a warranty, sounds like they are selling me a refurbished-used product. I found where Sony is being Class action sued over their DVD Players, that experience the same problems as my BoomBox. The technology is very similar as far as load mechanisms and drive motors so it would be a good assumption that Sony probably has this problem with all of their clam shell laser drives. Stay clear without an extended warranty.

I don't normally write reviews for products but I just wanted to sing the praises of this one. Simple functional design it's everything I wanted from a portable boom box. Sound quality is excellent with little/no distortion at the highest volumes. Plays standard cds, mp3 tracks, or Sony's special Atrac 3 format (mp3 = 1/10 ; atrac 3 = 1/20).

comes with full featured remote and sony's sonic stage software that lets you create atrac 3 cds.

Before purchasing this product I looked at several other boomboxes but none of them offered a comparable level of performance and functionality for under $100.

cons

- cd tray looks a little fragile, it pops out for easier loading.
- tuning non preset radio stations can be tedious, needs auto scan
- when initially loading mp3 cd takes a good 30 sec to play (it reads all title information for songs on cd before loading)
