Very good webcam

by sausage-dog , Nov 07 '04
Pros: Great price for PTZ webcam, robust features, java based, good picture quality.
Cons: Buggy software, no alternate software interface, viewer interface not robust.
I've been using the Toshiba IK-WB11A Webcam for about a month now. Overall I've been very satisfied with the camera quality and features. I've also experienced a couple of strange behaviors as well, but I think it's mainly due to Toshiba's software ...

Great optics, but the configuration experience is simply terrible and cumbersome

by gulbranson , Jun 11 '04
Pros: 3.01 Firmware, Optics (great low light performance), Zoom, Integrated Motion detector and Mic.
Cons: Support, Interface, Documentation, Configuration, Wireless Performance, Wireless interaction with Netgear base stations, no adjustable mount.
I've deployed three WB11A camera's outside for security purposes. From the first day I attempted to deploy the cameras wirelessly I ran into multiple issues with the configuration, wireless range and interaction with Netgear base stations. I've also ...

Save your money

by vpatui , Feb 23 '04
Pros: Good housing. Good low light.
Cons: Can't use 75% of the advertised features. Unreliable. Poor tech support.
I bought this for $599 at Frys. I bought it to monitor my vacation house. As the previous poster stated, their web setup is clunky. The night vision is good, but after that.... The camera hangs in low light situations, the only way out is a reboot. ...

Will problems ever be fixed??? Very worrisome

by churlock , Jun 22 '05
Pros: Extremely good low light sensitivity, many alarm options
Cons: Too long to list, but worse is the lack of support
I have had the unit for a week now (Jun,05) and have experienced most of the problems that previous reviewers have reported. I've tried 2 SD memories, neither will work (128mb and 512mb). They won't format (the manual doesn't say what format they ...

Good for live streams, but you're on your own for the rest.

by dbirchall , Jun 01 '04
Pros: Nice pan-tilt capabilities, good enough for live streaming.
Cons: Simply doesn't do some stuff it claims to.
I've been dealing with an IK-WB11A for about a month. Man, do I ever wish the folks who bought it had read some reviews here before they went shopping! I will say that getting it set up for basic stuff and "live" use is fairly straightforward. ...

Too much trouble

by sweeper2k , Mar 02 '04
Pros: Good optics
Cons: Poor firmware. Unreliable performance. Kept locking up requiring many reboots.
We purchased one unit for testing (considering it was a new product from Toshiba). The optics are great. It produces great images in low light (.03 lux). But the firmware and functionality of the camera are poor. Originally I had trouble getting it ...

Do not purchase this one

by edavid3001 , Apr 07 '05
Pros: Cheapest outside PTZ camera with high megapixel ratings.
Cons: Firmware is very buggy and the camera is unusable in a DVR security solution.
IKWB11A The camera cannot work over a slow WAN link. It's FTP recording sometimes works, usually doesn't. The camera will lockup and quit sending images. Sometimes it just drops off the LAN and switches to WIFI even though we don't have WIFI. ...

Nice picture - everything else is awful

by mfattori , Jul 26 '05
Pros: The camera's picture is excellent.
Cons: Customer satisfaction is unimportant to them.
I bought this camera based on reviews that I had read. I set it up and it mostly worked. The picture was excellent - but it is certainly a bandwidth intensive device. After a couple of days of use I noticed that if I faced it out a window, every 5 or 10 ...

Amazing night vision. WOW!
by winboy ,Dec 22 '03
Pros: Incredible night vision. Pan and tilt. Clear, sharp picture. Multiple resolutions.
Cons: Clunky web setup. Somewhat difficult getting it to recognize the wireless network.
I bought this camera for parking lot surveillance at an apartment complex. I have never written an epinions review, but after hooking up the camera and seeing its night vision performance, I just HAD to let people know.

During setup, I pointed the camera out my window to my darkened yard below. I live in a secluded area, and let me tell you... it is DARK. To my utter amazement, the camera auto-adjusted to show what looked like a DAYTIME COLOR IMAGE of my yard. I was flabbergasted. This camera's low light functionality is like nothing I have ever seen. The image gets a little grainy when viewing dark areas, but it is still amazing. For night vision, I was expecting, at best, a B&W grainy image with little detail. The picture provided by this Toshiba camera (in what looks like total darkness) rivals some color web-cams' performance in broad daylight.

The camera itself is incredibly sturdy and has an "industrial-strength" feeling.

The setup is a little clunky, but not terrible.

For any type of surveillance where night-time viewing is a necessity, I would highly, highly recommend this camera.

Outstanding Images - Browser Poor
by fireax ,Mar 03 '04
Pros: REAL 1280x960 image. Full Color in Extreme Low Light. Beautiful images!
Cons: User Interface is shabby and half-baked.
I have a collection of wired and wireless web cameras hanging from various parts of my house. This camera has the clearest, sharpest picture PERIOD! It sees in the dark! With the slow shutter mode engaged it only updates the frame once a minute or so, but it's full color 1280x960! If you want to see in the dark at 15fps, then turn the slow shutter mode off and you get grainy black & white, but you can see everything.

As others have mentioned, the user interface stinks out loud. Only the administrator and use presets and the email alarm mode doesn't seem to work at all. I don't know if Toshiba intends to improve the software, but if they support this camera they can own the market. It beats the snot out of the more expensive Panasonic PSTV02J (which I'll sell to anyone who wants a couple still in the box).

While this is a wireless B camera, the only way to utilize it to is fullest is to hardwire it to your network. 11mbps doesn't provide the bandwidth for a 1280x960 stream.

A good camera for professionals not for watching fish
by fieldworx ,Nov 16 '04
Pros: Excellent resolution and color
Cons: Network functions need improvement
I have deployed this camera outdoors on a post in a very harsh environment five thousand miles away and it allows me to look around like I was standing there. The color and the resolution are simply outstanding in all lighting conditions. It was easy to setup and plug in and the firmware is easy to operate.

The java applet leaves a lot to be desired and the email/ftp functions can be a little flakey so it is less than optimal for continuous viewing. However it can always be accessed and rebooted. The recording to SD card functions work very well although it would be nice to simply be able to download the saved files.

Overall I have been very satisfied with this camera.

I love this Camera
by oneshotsbro ,May 09 '04
Pros: Great low light performance, Quick pan and tilt speed, Super image quality
Cons: Email notification only works from some accounts
I bought the ik-wb11a. I have other cameras around the house but this has been the best I own. When I first installed the camera I was using wireless to connect to the network. I decided to try it wired. The performance doubled and I haven't had a problem since. Email notification with picture attachment works fine from my copper.net account but I could not get it to work from my earthlink.net account. You can see the quality of the cameras at http://www.camerawebpage.com/
I will be buying more in the future.

Could be better, could be worse
by timtimtj ,Nov 22 '04
Pros: Good picture, good feature set, good construction
Cons: Weak Mac admin support, FTP sometimes works. Still needs better firmware
I've had this camera at remote location for a couple of months. The picture quality is very good however focus is sometimes an issue. Make sure you have a fast Internet connect if you plan on viewing this camera from outside your local network.

The motion detection and recording is hit or miss and I was hoping that the latest firmware (3.02) would fix this...oh well.

I am primarily a Mac user (OS 10.3.x). Even with the latest version, the Java implementation on this platform leaves something to be desired. Some of the admin functions just don't work on the Mac. You might need a PC to do some things.

Now for the good news: If you plan on being on the same local network as the camera, it's great. The tilt and pan feature is good too. Plus, this camera is built well and should stand up to the elements.

IK-WB11a - Great images, bandwidth hog
by info-tis ,Apr 22 '07
Pros: Great pictures
Cons: Interface is difficult to work with, requires tons of bandwidth.
I setup a network of these units. If you need high level consistent recording, it will take a lot of experimentation to get everything working well. The interface appears easy to use, but it takes tons of tweaking based on your expectations to capture motion and clear pictures.

If you intend to use multiple units, don't use anything less than a gig switch. These use tons of bandwidth. Wireless connectivity with multiple units is hopeless.

If you've decided to give up on this Webcam and want to unload it, let me know.
