| Superdoo's Full Review: The Blue Nile |
The Blue Nile is situated in a very vaunted position in Berkeley. Students and tourists all make the trek up and down Telegraph to check out the weirdos selling hemp necklaces, and to try dining at some unique restaurant.
Well The Blue Nile keeps coming up as one such unique restaurant. Yes it's true that the food is delicious and that the atmosphere certainly is inviting, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's unique. Living here in Berkeley for almost four years now, I can't say that the city has fulfilled my expectations. I thought there would be poetry readings and long haired liberals at every corner ad that they'd accost me to sign petitions everyday. Well, that's not far from the truth but the problem is, that these "freaks" aren't that cool. They're just normal people with severe ideals about the fate of this nation.
And that brings me back to The Blue Nile. It's not one of those weird ethnic restaurants where you feel like you're in another country. I mean the setting is close, and the people are close, but if you look up, you realize you're in a dry-walled building erected in the early 50's for "authentic-style" restaurants to attract would-be tourists. It cheapens you.
The food at The Blue Nile is even less interesting than that. It's just stewed chicken or beef with carrots and rice. They give you some airy crepes so you can eat with your hands and they charge you an arm and a leg for it. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's still very good tasting and enjoyable, but it's far from the Hollywood imitation of Berkeley The Hippy Town.
The moral of this Epinion is this: Go to a nice restaurant, enjoy the food, but don't make a big deal out of how "unusual" the place is because it just might be that the owners are from Tennessee, the food they serve is ordinary stew, and the chairs you're sitting in are from Costco.
