Furbster's Full Review: Diablo 2 - Bestseller Series for Windows
I had never played Diablo when it came out and I didn't hear much about it when it did.
I've been told that it doesn't matter (and it doesn't seem to) because the first one is not as awesome as this one. So I haven't bothered to check into the first version.
I've also never been big into roll playing games. About 2 months ago my boyfriend bought me Diablo II. He had spent so much time playing it that he invited me to join him. Having no prior knowledge of the game at all, I just installed it.
Installation went smooth and the game ran just fine. The only problem with it is that it is a HUGE install (I took the larger install - over a gig of space) and the game starts up real slow, until I actually log in and get into the game.
When you get in, you make an account and chose what realm you'd like to play in. I chose to connect to battle.net and play online with friends.
Let me say from the very start the graphics on this game are like graphics you'd see in a movie. They really are the best graphics I have seen in a game in a long long time. There are a handful of acts and at the beginning of each act a short movie is played - really cool stuff here.
You choose a character out of 5, the manual has a great description of each character and it's strengths. The manual is a great source of information, it is rather long, but it is well organized and presents the game nicely.
You're taken to a chat room and you can chat there with others and get hints and suggestions from other people there. This is also the screen you use to create your game room or join an existing game room. Once in you began in the first town (or whichever depending on the act you are playing in) and go from there.
This is not like one of those game where you walk around and all you do is talk to np character after np character. In town you have people you can talk to and should talk to, but that's not the major part of the game, it is just part of it. The talking portions come in when you are completing quests and such. In this game there is much more fighting and action happening.
As you go a long in the game you pick up weapons and armor and potion to help you along the way. There are common, rare and magical items. The point of course is to get as strong and protecting items as possible. Your character stats are increased when you move up levels and you have a chance to gain more skills or increase the strength of already existing skills at that time.
When I first got this game going I was just blown away by the graphics - it was well worth the install space required! I haven't had tons of experience with RPG's, but enough to grasp the concepts. However this game does have alot of things to remember in it, but even I managed to understand it. Oh and even though the graphics are great, it's not terribly bloody - not disgustingly bloody like many games.
Part of what makes this game great is that the map changes every time you enter the game, it's never continual and the same. The layout for town is always about the same, but the rest of the map outward changes every time we start a new game.
I play this game about every 2-3 days and it usually turns into an all evening game session, sometimes as long as 4-5 hours. Believe me time goes really fast when engaged in this game.
I'd recommend this game to people who enjoy RPG's, adventure games, action games.. or people who just love games that are truly fun and exciting and well worth every moment. I think that younger kids under 12 or so wouldn't really 'get' this game that easily, but I think that anyone at any age could enjoy this game.
Ultimately.. this is what games should be like/look like/play like! This game has such a quality to it that I believe that it has nearly no competition - it really is the best out there.
