dragonmoney's Full Review: Diablo 2 - Bestseller Series for Windows
For more than 2 years Blizzard promised the gaming community that their upcoming game, Diablo 2, would be the best ever. Then they finally delivered. Although Diablo 2 is a great game no questions asked, the long wait has made me, and many people I know expect more from it.
Diablo 2 has some very good features and excellent game play, both of which I will discuss. But despite the good things there are two big things that upset me about Diablo 2. The first, its lateness, may not matter to you as much as the second: the uptime of Battle.net servers.
Battle.net:
Diablo 2 allows you to connect over the internet to Battle.net servers which allow you then to join games and play with other people. Battle.net also allows you to chat with other people who are playing the same game and see all the games that are available to join. A great thing right? Well yes, but that is only if they work. Blizzard has had a lot of problems with the large amount of traffic that Diablo 2 has generated. And often their servers are not able to take the strain. This causes them to go down fairly often. They report that they are working hard to fix the problems and it has gotten better.
The Upside
Once you manage to get a good game going there are several things that are very cool. First of all player relations have gotten much better. A big problem, for some, in the original Diablo was that people would go into a game and kill everyone there before anyone knew what had just happened. Blizzard has fixed this problem by telling other players when someone else "goes hostile" which is when they are able to attack other people. You can only go hostile when you are in town. And when you do so you can no longer use anyone's town portals.
Another problem the original Diablo had was that of stealing. Diablo 2 has definitely fixed this problem. You now click on another player while in town and you both must agree to even think about trading. Then a window pops up. It allows you to drag in items that the other person can then look at, but not take. Then when you have both put in what you want to trade you both click on the accept trade button and whala!
One more thing that you might be worried about is the cheating problem. In the original Diablo cheaters ran amuck. Luckily that has been completely eliminated in Diablo 2.
Conclusion
Despite Diablo 2's lateness, and a few minor problems, it is a fantastic game that is well worth the $50-60 that it costs. One last thing. Once you get this game, and get online, be wary of people telling you about bogus commands or cheats. Most of them tell you to type in something like:
"/m Info_backup yourpassword"
Okay, first of all there is a big statement on the right side of your screen saying not to ever use your password for anything except to login, I don't know who these people thing they are fooling. But unfortunately there is not a minimum IQ for playing Diablo 2. So... let me clarify.
THERE ARE NO CHEATS THAT WORK IN DIABLO 2
AND YOUR PASSWORD IS ONLY FOR LOGGING IN!
As you can see this is quite irritating to me. But that is the last of my ranting and raving. I hope this helped you to make a decision about whether or not to buy Diablo 2.
