| geneb1955's Full Review: 13 Coins |
This rating is actually for the 13-Coins at Seatac, 18000 International Bv S, but I've eaten at the downtown restaurant and there's really no difference. The dress is casual. It is the haunt of the after-closing crowd. I discovered 13-Coins when I worked in downtown Seattle. After working a shift at the grill of the Olympic Hotel, we would close down the bar across the street, then go out for breakfast. When cooks and waiters go back to a restaurant over and over, it has to tell you something (other than the tips were good that night).
The menu is available online at: http://13coins.citysearch.com/ . The web page is well laid out, up-to-date and actually includes the prices.
I recommend seating at the counter. Particularly if you can get down by the grill (as opposed to the salad prep area). It's poetry in motion as you watch the meals being prepared. Never a wasted move, as several chefs weave about juggling preparation of multiple entrées each. Food prep becomes performance art. Lots of flambé will keep you nice and warm. Not quite up to the Benihana show, but that's a different art. The high back chairs are comfortable and don't really impede conversation if you rotate toward your date. If you would rather have a nearly secluded meal, the booths are almost completely enclosed. It's almost like being in your own little dining room with a service entrance.
Keep in mind that the portions are huge! My wife and I made the mistake of each ordering the Australian Rock Lobster on our wedding night. I don’t eat lobster that often. When two LARGE lobster tails were served, I felt obliged to eat them both. Big mistake on part; my system is just not used to that rich food.
The menu can be a bit overwhelming. You’ll get good recommendations from the waiters. If you’re sitting at the counter, enjoy a cup of coffee and some antipasto while you watch some orders being prepared. This will give you a good idea of the portions and something that you just have to try. There are also daily specials that might help to narrow down the choices. Bon appétit.
