| sweetsue_98's Full Review: Contiki Holidays |
If you are between 18 and 35, and want to have a absolutely remarkable vacation, then Contiki is the company for you. Maybe you were like me, and had never heard of Contiki.. I am somewhat past the 35-year age limit but none the less; this is a splendid company that you need to know about. Maybe you have young adults in your family, or you are in the age group that Contiki caters to, if so consider the benefits of a Contiki holiday.
Just a little background to help you get the feel of what Contiki is all about. In 1961 a young man named John Anderson flew to London from New Zealand. He was traveling alone, and decided to rent a mini-van and get some other people to go in with him on the cost. There was a handful of people that spent the summer touring Europe. It is so much more fun to travel with other people, that the Contiki travel company started with this first trip. The next summer he did a repeat of the trip, and started this business. Contiki now offers tours all over the world.
Interested in Europe, Africa, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and yes, the United States, Contiki can take you there. Just as an example there are currently over 40 different tours of Europe ranging from 5 to 48 days. The prices range from around $300 to $2800 depending on the length and luxury level you are wanting. Trips can be combined, so if you saw one for 8 days in Spain, and then wanted to do an over view of major cities in Europe, you could easily put the two together. Airfare is an add-on, and dependent on where you are flying from. If you prefer to purchase your own ticket, or are fortunate to have frequent flyer miles, you are welcome to meet in the Departure City on your own.
Speaking of departure cities, there are extended packages for lodging if you want to spend more time for example in London. Those are great options that can be added for less than about $80 a day per person. You may not stay in the most luxurious hotel, but you will have a decent room and breakfast.
Maybe you are wondering how I became familiar with Contiki. After all, I am over 50, and wouldn’t be within the age group that Contiki sells to. Well, our daughter wanted to go to Australia, and saved her money for a year to make this trip alone. She had some friends to visit in Perth, but wanted to see more of the country. After she went to a travel agent, the Contiki Company was recommended to her. Of the 25 tour packages offered in Australia alone, she chose a trip for two weeks called the “Beaches and Reefs” tour that left Sydney and traveled to Cairns. The total price for her package was around $1500, and that included most of the meals, a great tour bus, many dinners, and lots of free time.
She had the opportunity to visit the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays Islands, and spent several days in Cairns. The accommodations were all very acceptable and several were on the high end of hotels. Even the hotel she stayed at in Sydney was very nice, in an excellent location, and was quite new. Again, about 40% of the meals are included, and the busses are very new and modern.
So why should you consider a Contiki tour for yourself, or for someone in your family?
Simply, you have the opportunity to travel with people your own age, have a great time (Mom and Dad are not going to be looking over your shoulder), you will have lots of free time, but still some organization. Fun, fun, fun, and more fun, and someone else has made all the arrangements for you. Just meet with your tour group, listen to the great music as you drive to your next stop, and enjoy!
The fun didn’t stop with this trip. Friendships were made with traveling partners from South Africa, England, and Argentina just to name a few. These people keep in touch and even have visited each other.
So, you say, “but I am not backpacking around the world”......but instead you are having the time of your life, with other young people, where someone else has done all the work.
As a friend of mine said, “It just wasn’t the same to see the Great Wall of China, when you had no one to share it with”. Contiki provides a total travel experience where the main driving force is having a great time.
Interested in a Contiki tour, then check out their website at www.contiki.com, see your local travel agent for brochures, or call (888) CONTIKI. You won’t be sorry!
