Pros: ATA Charter, Price, Agent at Resort
Cons: DTW
The Bottom Line: Positive. Better price. No surprises. Very helpful local agent. ATA operated flight was no frills but above reproach.

My family of four - two college age sons - left DTW at 5:30 pm on 2/8. Berry terminal, DTW parking and federal paper shufflers made process take 3 full hours. We left on time in a excellent new ATA run 737 which is the quietest jet I have ridden. The seats were leather in one class with ok leg room but narrow with 3 and 3 seating. There were some relic jets present run by other companies.
Arrival was a good experience.
The Las Brisas Resort has highest 6 apple rating but it is over rated. If you want to spent a great deal of time in the ocean, which is quite clean, and sitting on the sand, it would be your best choice. We will not go back. Lower level staff was friendly. The reception desk oozed attitude and clearly let us know we were discount clients. The physical hotel is being let go and is obviously 2/3 empty. Arriving at 10 pm the front desk told us to get food from room service. However, the lobby bar staff arranged sandwiches in the lobby bar when requested. All other Brisas restaurants were closed at 10 pm on Saturday and because of high prices stay empty.
Las Brisas is on a ridge between Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. You must use cabs which are plentiful and have uniform prices.
Ixtapa has tourist malls with ok restaurants but poor shopping. The Ixtapa marina has two very nice restaurants, Bucaneros and Beccola, and two others, nothing else really.
Ixtapa island day trip was enjoyed by my sons.
Zihuatanejo is a authentic small town with some poverty and some merchant class Mexicans, on a bay with 30-40 modest sized American yachts at anchor. There are US and Canadian snowbirds who rent for weeks or months and use the town for the restaurants and living essentials. The Mexican people are friendly or civil, helpful also. The bay front nearly always has a breeze and is several short blocks of tables with umbrellas or Palm trees for various small bars and restaurants. We went there a lot.
Two caveats: This area is hot and there are lots of recognizable smells. Second - air conditioning; forget about it. You don't even want it because it creates a dank result. Take loose clothes, best if long sleeved and long legged. Everybody slows down to adapt to the heat. Breeze or ceiling fans help a lot.
The local rep. for Funjet was Turismo International Del Pacifico. Their agent was at our hotel for hours each morning and late afternoon. We bought options which were as described. I now trust them.
We bought a trip to Patzquaro, a colonial village around 7000 feet in the Sierra Madre. This went from 6:30 am until nearly 10 pm. The drive time was about 4 hours each way. It was Mr. Toads Wild Ride and you must tough and fearless on the van. Seeing a colonial village and the region was worth $150 each and the perceived danger of Mexico style driving.
We have traveled to the usual Mexican destinations for years. We eat everything and always get a little sick which we control with septra or bactrim every 12 hours until better.
