| tysonson's Full Review: 1750 TRAVEL VAULT with WHEELS |
Pelican has been around since 1976 and has since evolved into the go to company for rugged, dependable, watertight and dust proof cases (they make tough flashlights too). SCUBA Divers seem to be the original target customers and are still a major focus. Today you can see their products in use with professionals from the military elite, journalists, rescue crews, and anyone else who needs a way to protect valuable equipment in harsh environments. Pelican also offers a custom service for anyone with custom needs.
I wanted a rifle case that would be good for life and in any environment, including airports. The Pelican cases had a proven track record and I decided to invest ($180) into one their cases, the Model 1750. Its constructed out of Pelicans Copolymer Polypropylene Structural Resin and they claim the Model 1750 is indestructible as well as watertight, chemical resistant, corrosion proof, and dust proof. Its internal dimensions measure 50 ½ x 13 7/16 x 5 ¼ and external dimensions are 53 x 17 7/16 x 6 1/16. It is temperature rated from -10F to 210F and floats in saltwater with up to a 90lbs load. Weight with foam is 26.5lbs, without 23.5lbs. It has two handles, a fold down on the end of the case and a fixed one in the middle, as well as a set of durable wheels on the other end of the case. The wheels are made out of ABS plastic and roll smoothly. The case I received is black but they also come in OD green.
The lid is held shut by four large, 2 wide, c-clamp type latches that you just force over a flange on the bottom portion of the case. They seem very secure, are hinged to the lid with stainless steel pins and are protected by a portion of the case that extends out in front of them a little. Next to the two end-latches are 3/8 holes for putting a lock on your gear. I use a couple of American heavy-duty locks on mine, and they are a tight fit but I feel comfortable no one will get through them too easy. It has four heavy-duty hinges with stainless steel pins in them. These steel pins can tend to work their way out a little on one end but it has only been a minor amount (about 1/8).
The case is sealed with a neoprene o-ring that Pelican recommends you keep lubricated (greased but with what specifically they dont say) and replace annually or when damaged (replacements are about $6). It also has a necessary feature for a case that is airtight (they dont claim it but it seems to be), a pressure relief valve. I have traveled with this case from Denver, CO to Orlando, FL and back. When I got to Florida there was a definite strong suction due to the altitude change and turning the pressure relief valve open let me back in the case. You can leave the valve open if you choose, it simply screws down or out for closed or opened and is located under the central handle.
The inside of my case was lined with three layers of solid dense 1 9/16 thick polyurethane foam (optional). One layer is in the lid and seems to hold its self in place by being just slightly larger than the room it is meant to occupy. The other two layers are in the bottom and the top layer is meant to be cut to the shape of its intended contents. You will need a sharp long knife to cut it or you could have a custom cut piece of foam from Pelican if you choose but I am sure it would be expensive. Uncut replacement foam is about $60 for the set of three (I have not seen it sold as an individual piece) so try to get the cut right the first time. Pelican offers what they call Pick-n-Pluck foam that makes it easy to get the shape you want in the foam by plucking out the squares, unfortunately its not offered for the Model 1750 (maybe due to size).
