Whether you call it "snow in a can" or "instant snow", this is something that can make quick work of decorating windows, mirrors, artificial trees, wreaths and holiday scenes. The 18 ounce can will give you a lot of coverage but it is easy to go a little overboard with it and cover anything that doesn't move. Chase Products has some really interesting seasonal products that can help you decorate in a flash but you really do have to use some common sense when using it. The actual name of the product is Santa Snow and as usual it is listed incorrectly in the Epinions database; if you are going to try to find this in a store or online make sure you are searching for the correct product or you might end up with something completely different like white spray paint or a window deicer.
Chase Products Santa Snow
What exactly is it? It is a spray on white aerosol that clings to most surfaces, dries almost immediately and cleans up quickly. What is it made of? The main ingredient is calcium carbonate but it also contains isobutane, propane and sorbitan tristearate. Those three ingredients dissipate when the product is released from the can but are necessary to get the product from the can to the surface, fluff and stick. It is safe to use on most surfaces but it never hurts to do a test area if you are worried that it won't stick or will flake off easily. I have never had this stain, mar or mark anything that I have applied it to but you never know when that could happen.
How easy is it to use? If you can shake a can and aim it, you can use this. You should check to make sure that whatever you are spraying this on won't be damaged or cause it to flake off prematurely. Wallpaper, certain types of paints, fish tanks, animal enclosures and doorways are just a few of the places that you shouldn't spray this because it either won't stick, isn't safe or it will flake off. Cleaning it up is easy, in most cases all you will need to do is wipe it off with a dry paper towel or cloth. Of course that will result in a mound of it accumulating under the decorated area so make sure you vacuum or Shop-Vac it up.
Decorating with this is easy; you can use stencils to make patterns or just use it at the bottom of windows to simulate snow. This also works great on mirrors if you don't want to hang anything like garland from it. Just spray the edges and you are good to go. If you are worried about overspray, slide a piece of cardboard or poster board behind the area you are spraying and it will catch anything that goes off the edge of the mirror. An odd side note, I wouldn't recommend spraying this on bathroom mirrors; I did that a few years ago when I went a little crazy decorating and the first time someone took a hot show it 'melted' right off the surface. Funny yes, a pain to clean up, indeed. If you want to make layers of this make sure that you give it enough time to set up and harden before you apply another layer. Don't put the can right up to the area you are spraying or the force from the aerosol will knock some of the product loose.
You can get this in two sizes, the 13 ounce can is a little easier to work with because it is a fatter and you can get a better grip on it but if you want or need more coverage the 18 ounce one is the way to go. The only real disadvantage of the 18 ounce can is that it is taller [but thinner] and makes it hard to get into tight or cramped spots. If you want something for decorations or under a smaller tree you might want to go with the plastic Winter Snow from Chase Products. The six ounce bag will give you a lot of coverage and can be used over and over again if you can keep dirt and glitter from getting into it.
There are some safety concerns with this; younger kids shouldn't be allowed to play with the can or with the snow once it has been applied. It is not considered toxic but it isn't exactly something that you want kids or pets to be ingesting. I got this on my face when I was spraying it on a mirror and didnt have the can aimed properly, the taste is pretty bad but I didnt get sick from it. Suffice it to say, most pets will sniff it and leave it alone. Kids might slide their finger through it thinking it is whipped cream or something yummy but if they taste it once chances are that will be the only time they do so. If they are sitting there eating a ton of it you should contact a physician to see if they need to be treated or given something to help it pass through their system.
Santa Snow does cost a little more than other similar products but it is worth it in my opinion. The 18 ounce can costs about $3.79 but you are going to get a lot of coverage from it, it has a nice strong white color to it [not pearl] and it goes on in a hearty manner so in most cases you won't have to retreat an area several times. I would rather pay a little more for a can of this than to buy the cheaper stuff and have to use a lot more of it to get the same amount of coverage. This is the only instant snow that I will use on the front windows of the house because it completely covers it with one pass, doesn't flake off if condensation occurs and is one of the easiest products to clean up.
The Bottom Line
I have used a lot of different fake snow products but this is one the few that gives you good coverage without leaving blank or bald spots that need to be recovered. The downside it that it is a seasonal item so it might be hard to find outside of the Christmas season. You can try hardware stores, party supply stores and theatric warehouses to see if they have it in stock at other times of the year. Of course if you want the best price on it you should stock up on it when stores are having the post-seasonal clearance sales. Just make sure you store it in a cool, dry place and you can have snow any time of the year!
As always, thanks for the visit
