Pros: Once again Intex brings smiles to our face.
Cons: Can get costly.
Last year for my sons birthday we bought him a pool. That review can be found here: http://www.epinions.com/content_98528890500. This year we bought him a pool as well. (Happy 10th Birthday Son!) Why do you ask did this little boy get another pool when he was so happy with the one he had gotten last year? Well, I shall tell you why!
You see, it is like this; we got a dog. A beautiful black lab that we named Barnabas and he is a wonderful dog. However, still being a puppy he has acquired some bad habits. Chewing everything in his site, barking, digging, etc. The normal things for a puppy to do. We keep him in the house at night and take him out during the day. We dont allow him to run loose because he also has the bad habit of jumping up on people and so in that he scares the children. Certainly we dont need any lawsuit over this dog!
Now keeping all of that in mind I need to let you know that we took last years pool down for the winter (which here in Florida is not much of a winter) and laid it over the trampoline. Since we had a rather warm winter (which is normal for us) the children decided to jump on the trampoline thus removing the pool. I put the pool back onto the trampoline by myself and paid the price for doing so. So, hubby told me I couldnt do it again. Fine with me! And so the pool got moved off again and no one would put it back onto the trampoline.
Follow me so far? Good! Now one night I got mad with Barnabas because he just wouldnt stop barking to go out. I took him out and that was not good enough for him! So, I let him out on his own. Alone, in the night to do what he wanted to do! I didnt care at all! Fine, no problems, he came home the next morning. But, we found that he had managed to pull out the filters belonging to the pool (the one that had got left on the ground). That pool must have felt bad knowing it couldnt defend itself against that black dog! No problem we could fix the filters (providing the pool got put back onto trampoline.) Well, of course it didnt! And so a few nights later I got mad at the dog again and out the door he went! This time completely destroying the pool! And certainly they all tried to blame me for this mishap. Well, I was not having that at all. I had to politely remind these people that they took the pool off and that they had forbid me to put it back and that none of them did! So there! It was plainly not my fault that Barnabas had destroyed the pool that we all had so enjoyed. And thus, this is the story of how we came about getting another pool for my son.
This time around we got a bigger and better pool!
Intex 18 ft. Easy Set Above Ground Swimming Pool is so cool! Ours is 48 inches in height but 42 inches is also available. It has all sorts of room for many people to have fun and it was pretty easy to put up. After getting ground level enough to accommodate it. After doing this we laid down the ground cloth and then set the pool on that. Then we had to straighten the pool out which was not hard to do at all.
After positioning the pool where we wanted it we started to fill it up and after getting about an inch or so of water in the pool we discovered that we needed a little more dirt to make the pool more even. Getting any above ground even is the absolute key to success in swimming! Now, after getting that all taken care of we started the water again this time allowing the pool to come straight up. Now mind you that the picture on the box shows a well manicure yard, level with no lumps at all. And two children putting the pull together. Certainly this can happen for anyone with that type of yard! Dont let that picture deceive you at all for that is not completely right! Most people dont have that type of yard and some work may be required out of you to get your yard ready. So, the statement Ready for Water in 30 minutes is not completely true. It took us about an hour total time from package to water.
The filter pump will handle 2000 gallons of water per hour and is a higher tech pump than last years pools. The pump is also easier to put together than last years pump. All we had to do was assemble the hoses to the pump to the pool (same as last years models) but no clamps. The design on this size pool filter pump allows for an easier assembly. We just had to turn the hose nuts tight after making sure that the rings, housing covers, collars, etc were in place. That was it! You will need to refer to the manual for proper placement of these parts. Also, it is recommended to only turn the pump on for about 3 hours after swimming. You can use any air pump for replacement when and if necessary.
The pump also has handles at the top of the hoses (that go into the pool), which allow for easy turning and locking in order to use other items mentioned below. (Sprayer and skimmer.)
We also got a ladder, which was easy to assemble (see instructions.) There was also a pool cover, surface skimmer with basket, sprayer, vacuum, and net. The net converts into the vacuum and using a water hose this allows you to clean the bottom of the pool.
The sprayer will attach to one of the filters and allows the children to have water spraying on them as they want. The skimmer is used with the same filter in cleaning the surface of the pool. Both are easy to interchange as needed. (see instructions.) I must note here that the filter outlet for these is the one closest to the top of the pool. If you are facing the filters it is the one on the right.
The sidewalls are 3-ply and 4 foot high. This allows for extra strength and durability. From the box: Made of Super-Tough vinyl, a high molecular PVC, this pool is highly resistant to damage from abrasion, impact and sunlight. The whole pool is made of three separate layers --two outer layers of heavy-gauge PVC laminated to an inner layer of polyester mesh for extra reinforcement NOTE: This PVC material, as wonderful as it is, IS NOT LAB PROOF IN ANY WAY, SHAPE or FORM! Especially if they are a puppy with strong, durable teeth!
The product is latex free, which I think is wonderful to avoid allergic reactions. Some people are allergic severely to latex. You can also fold it for winter storage. And you can cover the pool daily with the pool cover. Now, this can be a little aggravating until you learn how to do it. Two people are better than one thats for sure!
The pool will hold about 5600 gallons of water when it is full. You can also use regular Clorox Bleach, which is much cheaper and just as easy or easier to use. About 2 gallons a week, maybe 3 will do it. You can pick bleach up for less than a dollar! Weigh your options with chemicals!
Price of pool? $348.00 at our local Wal Mart. Slightly higher at other stores. You can also order the pool from www.walmart.com but you will pay high s/h charges.

How I Feel
Well, another year and a couple hundred more dollars! This pool was certainly more than the one last year but it is a lot larger. We can all fit in the pool with no problems and have loads of fun! This pool is huge!
The ladder is flat on the top allowing a child to sit down before entering into the pool if they are a little scared. The skimmer and net and vacuum is are easy to use once you learn how too. You know how simple things are hard to figure out? Well, the same here! Then you feel so silly!
My son is having a ball in the pool. It took about a week to get the water completely ready for him, including sun heating time. We had a cold snap come through so it took a little longer. He is enjoying the pool tremendously and so are the rest of us. My son bought me my own float for an early Mothers Day gift so that I could have my own tanning space! Isnt that nice of him!
There was also a video that came with the pool and this was helpful to us in understanding the assembly of this size of pool. Besides, it gave my husband a few minutes before having to actually get out and get started!
Being our second Intex pool we are happy customers. And, in fact we would still have the other one had it not been for the dog and the other people who live in this house! Ha! But, as usual no one listens to me! When do they ever listen to the mother? You mothers know just what I mean!
I hope that this has helped in some kind of way.
