angelwings724's Full Review: DeWalt 18 Volt Compact Drill Kit
I will be the first to admit that I know basically nothing about tools. However, after reading the features on the DeWalt 18 Volt Cordless Drill, I decided to purchase this as a gift for my husband.
Features Compact size to fit into tight spots Dual speed range (0-to-450 RPM and 0-to-1,500 RPM) High-performance motor delivers up to 380 unit watts Weighs 5.2 pounds Manufacturer's 3-year warranty Included with drill/driver: one-hour charger, two 18-volt batteries, double-ended screwdriver bit, and heavy-duty kit box
I was really surprised that it was so lightweight. When I first spotted it, it looked so large, heavy, and bulky. But it really isn't any of those things at all. If I were so inclined, I think that I would be able to use it.
I put my husband to work with his new drill pretty quickly, assembling products. He was impressed with its size. He was able to get into really tight spots. It never lost any of its power over the course of the day.
It comes with 2 batteries and a charger. He charged the first battery and I was impressed that it only took 1 hour to charge it fully. I expected it to take longer. It only has one screwdriver bit and we are looking into buying others for it. However, it is pretty basic so it fits most things we would need it for regular household projects.
Here are the specifications as listed on the DeWalt website for this drill: Voltage - 18 V Max Power - 380 UWO # of Speed Settings - 2 Max RPM - 0-450/0-1,500 Clutch Settings - 17 Chuck Size - 1/2 " Chuck Type - plastic, single sleeve ratcheting Tool Weight - 5.2 lbs
I don't know what any of this means, and neither does my husband, but the drill he had before was a Skil brand with a 14V battery and this drill has much more power than the one he was using. He says it doesn't bog down as much as the Skil when drilling through thick items and with thinner stuff, it's through before he starts almost. He does wish that there was a better guide to the uses for the different clutch settings, he's been spending a little extra time experimenting with the settings with each different use he's been using it for. But, overall, he is very happy with the drill.
I read a lot of reviews on this product on various websites. Some were good, some bad, but we haven't had any problems out of it at all. I don't know how it will work with heavy-duty projects, but we will find that out soon enough as we are planning some home renovations this summer.
I purchased this drill at a local Home Improvement store. The purchase price was $199.99, but it was on sale for $159.99. I thought this was a bit expensive, but I had read really good things about the DeWalt brand and figured that it was a good deal for what I was getting.
