| DiamondLynn's Full Review: 1999 Hess Toy Truck |
IT'S ALMOST TIME AGAIN! IT'S ALMOST TIME AGAIN!
Each November for the past thirty-some-odd years, Hess Gasoline stations have sold Hess trucks. Toy miniature versions of their delivery trucks.
My husband became enamored with these nostalgic little toys shortly after we were married 9 years ago. We had gone to the Hess station to buy some for our nephews.
We purchased the 7 trucks and went home happy that we had the "boys" taken care of for Christmas. We got in the door and shook off the cold and unpacked our treasures.
We loaded them into the pile under the tree and admired our shopping handiwork. We were all done for the season! We poured some wine, lit some candles and the tree and sat down to our wrapping duties.
With sweaters and socks wrapped we started on the fun stuff...the toys! My love was wrapping the last of the Hess trucks when he started reminiscing about how he had had Hess trucks when he was little. Every year for Christmas.
I told him that I vaguely remembered my brother having one, but don't think I really ever played with it.
We looked at each other, and the same magical spark that happened when we met struck again. Slow smiles came across our faces while we each opened a package. Giggling we tore off the fresh wrapping paper. After all, we have to make sure they work right? Nothing worse than getting a toy on Christmas morning that doesn't work!
We popped in the batteries that were included and began crawling around the living room, chasing each other with the trucks.
We decided that we would keep the two trucks and just go buy new ones. Unfortunately, Hess trucks literally roll off the shelves as soon as they go on sale and we were unable to replace them.
We decided that we would keep the two trucks and get something else for two of the boys..when we got a call from their parents, "You DID find a Hess truck didn't you?"
"Um, they don't want a cabbage patch doll hm?" So we wrapped up the trucks again and left them under the tree for the intended child. My hubby was heartbroken but handled the disappointment like a "big boy".
Luckily, my husbands best friend was as big of a baby as he is and bought a truck for him that year...and my husband has had one under the tree every year since sans one..but thats another story.
The Hess trucks popularity is compounded by its unbelievably reasonable price. While the price has risen over the years it is still under $20.00 and INCLUDES batteries! Parents love the price and ease of being able to shop while picking up gas. It is also one of the sturdier toys on the market.
Children love the toy for its realistic feel. The 1999 truck is a flat bed rig with a space shuttle with satellite as its cargo. The shuttle and satellite are removable and creates three toys in one!
All the lights that you would find on a big rig are on the 1999 Hess truck and they all light up! The shuttle has flashing lights and warning beeps! It also has the roaring sound that a real shuttle emits on take off. There is a button on the top of the shuttle that opens a secret compartment where the satellite is secured.
The satellite is a small barrel shape with a red light on the top. It has clear plastic wings, we assume to help it remain in orbit. It is removable from the space shuttle and suitable for "launching" assuming that every one is wearing protective goggles.
The bonus of buying this particular toy for your child is that Hess trucks are HUGE collectors items. Each truck is dated on its license plate and their value can range from the 9.99 or whatever you paid for it up to five THOUSAND dollars! So, dig through your attic and look for your old trucks and keep the boxes for future use.
The 1999 Hess truck is sold out. You still have a chance to get the 2000 model (unless you live near us..hehehe) which is usually available the Friday after Thanksgiving. You can also find the 1999 model by checking your newspapers classified ads or collector shows.
Enjoy!
