Birdfeather's Full Review: 1 - 1/2no. Miracle Gro/Toma
I decided to put out a couple of tomato plants this year. I love freshly sliced tomatoes and also BLT sandwiches, so growing my own tomatoes was a way to ensure that I had fresh tomatoes on hand. I'm glad that I put these out since we have a recall on tomatoes currently being contaminated with E. coli.
Miracle Gro Tomato Plant Food
I purchased a 1.5 lb. box of Miracle Gro Tomato Plant Food for my small crop this year. I'm sure I'll have plenty of this left over since I only planted a couple of plants and the box says this size will cover a 600 square foot garden. Miracle Gro Tomato Plant Food is a special formula of plant food for tomatoes and vegetables. It instantly feeds your plants and is easy to use.
Miracle Gro Tomato Plant Food comes with a measuring scoop to make feeding easy for you. Directions state to use 1 tablespoon of plant food per 1 to 1 1/2 gallon of water. The plant food is packed inside the box in a sealed plastic bag which is also inside another plastic bag which is also sealed. This allows the fertilizer to stay fresh and also a double barrier to keep me from spilling it all over the place.
You should use this fertilizer once every 7-14 days according to the directions. To apply you dampen the leaves and also soak the soil. Why the leaves? The box states that this product feeds through the leaves, as well as the root system. This was a fact that I had never heard before so reading the label completely came in handy!
The plant food is a bright hot pink in color and gives a light pinkish color after mixed in a one gallon container.
My Thoughts on Miracle Gro Tomato Plant Food
I've been using Miracle Gro Tomato Plant Food since the second week in May. My tomatoes were only about 6 inches tall at that time. I'm happy to report that my plants are now well over two feet tall, have bloomed and I now have tomatoes!
I use Miracle Gro Tomato Plant Food once or twice a week. One thing I would like to mention is that there are special instructions for feeding tomato plants on the container. You start out using only one cup of mixed solution per plant and are advised to gradually increase the amount of plant food. Once your plants are established, you will be using the product on a regular basis. You should follow the directions because too much fertilizer can be as bad as no fertilizer and cause the death of your plants.
My tomato plants started looking very healthy after I stated using this plant food. They bloomed and about a week later I found little baby tomatoes on the plants. I'm waiting now for the fruit to ripen.
The reason I chose this product was because it was designed especially for tomato plants. Miracle Gro makes several different plant foods for vegetables and flowers. Be sure to read the labels. I found that the vegetable formula contained a higher amount of nitrogen which may have burned the plants.
The only other product I used on the tomato plants was a Sevin Dust to ward off pests.
