Pros: Handling, Looks, Power, Flexability, Gets better with mileage.
Cons: Lousy Stock seat, Engine Surging at low RPMs, Expensive Dealer Labor.
The Bottom Line: The best Sport-Tourer, period.

| Den350's Full Review: 2000 BMW R 1100 RT |
In March of 1999 I purchased my Opal Blue R1100RT from Westchester BMW in NY. This bike had replaced my 1998 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic. The attraction t the BMW was the looks of the bike and the promise of a Bike that could Handle and tour. Prestige was also part of the purchase. In no way was I disappointed with the promise that the bike handled and toured well. As a matter of fact I racked up 12,000 miles in just 5.5 months of riding. The one ride that attests to this bike's touring capabilities is when I left from Southern NY for the BMW Rider's Association Annual held in Williamsburg VA. I decided to do the ride at night and arrived 5 hours later with little fatigue. The bike was more comfortable that my previous Harley and Gold Wing before that. While most of the ride was on I-95, I did spend an hour + on back road twisties where the RT really shines. The electronically adjustable windshield at first seemed a gimmick, but quickly became a necessity and I feel bad for all those other bike that don't employ them. The changes that I did make included changing the stock seat for a Sargent seat. This was a worthy $350 assessor that made the bike alot better. On the mechanical side, BMW replaced without charge the front rotors which prematurely warped. After talking with other owners this is not a unique occurrence, but not a widespread problem either. In Spring of 2000 I sold the RT for two reasons: First, Low speed / RPM's caused the engine to surge. This is a big issue on alot of BMW chat boards and mailing lists, but BMW does not acknowledge the problem. Some owners say the solved it by doing what the call a 0=0 (Zero equal Zero) adjustment to the Motronic, which is the device that feeds fuel to the engine. The second reason is that I thought the 5 speed was missing some range and the announcement of a R1150 with the 6 speed transmission found in the R1100S would make this bike perfect. I do plan on buying another BMW motorcycle shortly and am having patience for the R1150RT with the 6 speed. Although I would not hesitate to recommend the current offering.
