The first article about the X was just like the first time I saw my wife - love at first site - I knew that's the bike I had to have (are you listening, Dear). In January of '99, I plunked my deposit down on a new Aztec Orange that was due to arrive in Saudi Arabia (where I live) in a month. That was almost three years ago and I still have it sitting in my garage along with its "sister," the black FXDX that I bought from one of my riding buddies, and the beautiful '00 FXDX that I just bought because my dealer had a glut of FXDXs and put the rich red sheet metal from a '01 to get me to bite.

Well I bit on the first day I laid eyes on it and love it to this day. That baby doesn't vibrate, it throbs. Vibration has never been an issue and the faster I ride, the clearer the mirrors get.
I've put over 18,000 miles on mine in Saudi Arabia including a 2,000-mile run to the '00 HOG rally in Oman (the '01 Dubai rally has been canceled). I rode there with two Sportsters and we just kicked it up to about 145 kph (90 mph) and the only time we stopped was for gas and to pick up the parts that fell off of the Sportsters. I've been out in the middle of nowhere with nothing but my beast and a few tablespoons of gas left, and I've never had anything that even SMELLED like a problem (ever).
It's spent most of it's life with a Dynojet Thunderslide, Screamin' Eagle slip-ons, and a K&N breather kit, and now at 30,000 kms, that baby pulls. It'll outrun any Sportster with similar or even slightly higher tune. I was working on it the other day and noticed that the oil is still almost clear after a thousand miles.
After our little "Iron Butt" to Al-Kharj and Riyadh and back to Dhahran, I had bonded with this thing to where I felt like it was part of the family (my wife doesn't see it exactly the same way I do).
The '00 with the four-pot calipers doesn't seem to stop any better than the '99 with the singles (braided lines may correct that, though) and everything else works exactly as it should.
The problems I have had are:
1) The horn stopped working,
2) The primary case gasket collects dust,
3) There is slight water condensation in the gas gage,
4) The speedometer "goes funny" once every few months,
But what goes right is that it's been as reliable as my new Toyota Land Cruiser, which in my opinion, sets the reliability standard.
