| Old-Man's Full Review: 2000 Honda Elite 80 |
Great machine. I've had many full sized motorcycles but scooters are different. The center of gravity is much lower on a scooter making them much more stable and easier to ride. You feel like your totally in control. Also the scooter's step through design makes getting on and off easy and having a flat floor area to place your feet comforting and reassuring. Now that you know why I ride scooters, It's time to tell you about the one I ride. The Honda Elite 125cc. I bought it used 6 months ago for 800.00 from a local family that had three of them. I first test drove the 250cc version ( what I was orig. going to buy) The 250cc was faster, noisyer, longer (this is what bothered me the most, it's length made it a motorcycle, it felt clumsy to park) While I was thinking about my decision, I started asking questions about the pair of Elite 125s parked next to me. They said "sure, take one for a spin" and off I went. Now I was having FUN. The Elite 125cc is perfect. 80cc is just too wimpy, and the 250cc too big/heavy. I scoot at up to 60mph down hills, and as slow as 25mph going up large long hill with son on back. In town I'm faster than traffic so I can beat cars between traffic lights, or outrun a pack of dogs with a passenger on back (guy with 50cc told me he could not do it alone). The Elite has been very dependable, It has electric push button starting (no kickstarter) so it'd better be. Of all scooters/motorcycles i've seen, the Elite has the largest Tail lamp area which helps keep you alive. I bolted a rubbermaid tote box onto the luggage carrier and can now store away helmet or raingear, or bring groceries home. Put a couple reflectors on the box to increase your rear visibility. I really love the Elite, it's seat is comfortable as long as your alone. I pick up my 11 yearold son from school whenever weather permits. Yes the Elite is fast and strong. But I find it a pleasure to enjoy it's other strength, the ability to stay upright at very low speeds. We call this sight-seeing mode. We cruise by garage sales, to the top of hills to watch sunsets, It's so fun I stopped parking it in the garage so I could just put the key in and go. And how about those Toe-Warmers? Yup, this baby is water cooled with radiator in front nose. Heated air is directed to vents on either side by your toes. If you open vents in fall/winter Voila! the toe-heaters give you warm clean air.
The Elite has many other features most important being Autoshifting. I call it No shifting. No clutch, no nothing. Just twist the gas and go and go. My Elite will pass cars in town, but requires no shifting of any kind. Driving the Elite 125 is point and shoot. Starts as fast as you can turn the key, pop the kickstand and go. My 1984 model is Gold and it's futuristic fairing and concealed headlamp still turns heads. So if you own a 50 or 80 and was thinking....Do it! it's the next level of both performance and enjoyment. The Elite would be excellent for both the beginner, and experienced rider.
