| jgxenakis's Full Review: 2000 Honda Elite 80 |
So, I go to visit my college friend (class of 1972) in his summer house in Leelanau, Michigan in July. When I get back from dipping my feet in the lake waters, he shows me his new purchase - a purple motor scooter. What. . .? He tells me he bought it so that he could ride the 10 miles into Northport every morning to pick up a copy of The New York Times and buy "the best cinnamon rolls ever made" at Barb's Bakery.
I made the trips into town myself that weekend, and was hooked on Barb's cinnamon rolls and the scooter. It was great fun -- easy to learn, manageable, something for people like me who have no need or desire for a big motorcycle. When I got back home, I did a little research and bought the Honda. I wanted something zippy that would get me around and carry an extra passenger.
I love driving it. All the bloody-hot summer long I drove in shorts, tee shirt and sandals in and around my town of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. The breeze was cool and fresh all around me, and I got bunches of smiles from onlookers. During the fall, my kids (and I) got a big kick from driving to soccer and baseball games on the back of the scooter. I use it to drive to the railroad station on my morning commute.
The scooter handles adequately. It does not have a particularly large diameter wheel, so a little more care is needed about road conditions. I have driven it to and around New York City (Manhattan) - no problem. The engine and starter are 100% reliable - it starts first time, every time. On a level course, it can reach a 45-50 mph speed. For its weight and engine size, it accelerates quickly.
Now, this scooter is not the most beautiful to look at - it's design cannot compare with old Vespas and Lambrettas I remember. It's been mockingly called "Tupperware" - the body is entirely plastic. A friend of mine called it "nerdy."
This scooter is not for highway use - it is illegal and extremely dangerous to do so. In New York State, a motorcycle license/learner's permit is required to drive this vehicle.
