| seaamigo's Full Review: 2000 Honda Elite 80 |
I bought this from a fellow who bought it new in February 2008 and rode it 56 miles before deciding it wasn't for him. I doubled the mileage in the first day I had it and was still riding it on his gas! I knew nothing about scooters, but decided that a Honda was the one to own after visiting a local scooter shop specializing in great-looking 150cc models that came with a one-year parts warranty but only covered labor for 90 days. I'm not a genius, but I figured that any manufacture who won't cover the labor for as long as it will guarantee the parts must have a reason. The same dealer had a 2000 Elite with a rough body and 5000 miles on it and he was willing to "let it go" for $300 less than his brand new, fancy fake-chromed retro 150cc rocket. The fact that an old Honda with that kind of miles was still humming and had that kind of resale convinced me to look for a Honda. I haven't ridden a motorcycle of any kind on 30 years. The operation of this one is so simple, I was on it for 5 minutes and was perfectly comfortable riding it the 25 miles back home in heavy traffic. I weigh 210 pounds and it will cruise smoothly at 35 to 40 mph and tops out at about 48 mph. The smaller you are, the faster it will go. The saddle is incredibly comfortable, even after several hours of riding. Cons: The styling is dated and the "Star Wars" 1970s plastic panels look pretty flimsy and easily breakable. This one looked brand new, but had what looked like a small stress crack in the faring when I bought it. I think I'll be ready for something a bit bigger that will handle some short freeway hops soon, but I can tell you that this is a very impressive ride. It's definitely "Old School," but sometimes the old ways are best ways. No significant issues with the Elite 80. If the performance works for you, it's definitely as good as it gets in this power range. Suggestion: If you're considering a no-name bike with a bigger motor, I'd ride it first to make sure that that the performance is there. A junk engine,l even if it's double the displacement, probably won't get you double the performance. Note: Before I bought this one I checked with the Honda dealer and was told that new ones are selling for $200 over the $2400 sticker, plus freight and TTL
