| ccn158's Full Review: 2000 Honda Gold Wing SE |
If you think that the Honda looks like a beast, you're right. So if that's not the sort of thing you're after, this bike probably will not be for you. But if you want a bike to carry out all the things you need it to, AND impress the ladies, then keep on reading.
I must admit to this point at not owning one of these beauties, as I can't really afford it. But my courier does own one, and one day I gave it a detailed checking out - a quick drive around the streets of London.
Dave says that it's powerful - and boy is he right. Sitting on the pillion with the engine going is exhilerating to say the least, and you're actually going slower than what you thing you are because of the great engine noises. I think I'm probably too used to driving a car!
But here's what I think about the Honda, split into it's different sections:
Engine/Transmission: The engine, as you have heard before is great; with the 2000 edition going up to 1520cc. *STOP PRESS* The latest edition, the 2001 GOldwing WILL be even more powerful at 1832cc!!
The engine is silky smooth and you definately feel the power, however it is a bike that you expect to go fast. In this respect you probably won't be suprised.
The transmission is good as well; smooth gear changes, at good ratios, also you get a reverse gear; something that I thought that would never work on a bike. It's very useful, and is used for parking, and despite my fears that I would fall off, it works very well. So top marks to Honda for that.
Drive Quality: The drive is superb on the Goldwing. Best used for 'cruising' ie. driving along on a motorway at high speed. The controls are very responsive, and even at high speed is very easy to control. The throttle is very light, and given an empty road, you'll find yourself gathering speed very quickly. Watch those cops!
Many people complain of a sore backside after a long drive, but not so here. The seats are very comfortable - especially the passenger one with a backrest! The drivers seat is well designed - it's low, close to the centre of gravity, and gives you good posture but at the same time keeping your head high above the dashboard.
It's still a fine bike for everyday drives, though. ABS (Auto Braking System) brakes and traction control still mean that you can ride it around the streets in comfort.
Uses: For couriers looking to get things from one place to another, this is ideal. There is ample storage space for equipment, and although it may be wider than other bikes, you'll be able to weave through less dense traffic if you are careful. In more dense traffic you are going to have to stop, so that's a little downside. But take away the width and you'll take away the character.
Overall: A superbly designed bike, with massive power. Driving it you look mean and the only problem is that you probably will be going too fast for everyone to see you! Other than that, very tidy, a good-looking bike with great features but only for the faster drivers and those with loads of cash.
