The scooter bug bit me last spring. Initially I was looking at the smaller 50cc machines, but knew I wouldn't be satisfied if I couldn't get out on the open road.
Then I discovered the Helix. Its styling is a bit unusual, but hidden under all that plastic is the heart of a touring bike. I've been riding it for a year now and it still amazes me at times. I can fit quite a bit in the rear trunk and zip around town with ease.
I have been up to 75 mph on the highway with the bike. That seemed to be as far as the throttle grip would turn. Going downhill, it might be able to do at least 80. Uphill on a long grade, I was only able to go 65 before the grip stopped turning.
The overall design of the Helix hasn't changed much over the past 10 or so years. It looks like the 2001 models will come in black, though, and will have a higher sticker price of $4,999.
Acceleration is exceptional. I've read that the smaller wheels provide more torque than larger wheels. I'm confident when pulling out into traffic (even highway traffic) that I can take off quickly and easily. When researching the Helix I asked an owner how quick it was. He said "twist the handle and you're gone". That's a very accurate description.
My Helix is used mostly in the city with occasional highway trips. Overall I get at least 60 MPG. More highway usage should result in higher MPG.
One might think with wheels smaller than a motorcycle that the ride would be choppy, but its actually quite smooth.
Someone who wants a motorcycle but doesn't want something with more power than they can use or handle should seriously look into the Helix.
I purchased my '99 Helix new from the showroom floor with 0 miles on it. The Helix is an expensive machine to purchase initially. But you are paying for a high quality machine that will give you years of dependable use with simple maintenance.
