Pros: comfortable ride with all the bells and whistles

| TrinityLisa's Full Review: 2000 Honda Helix |
Several years ago while living in Florida I had an opportunity to buy a Honda Helix. Let me begin by saying that this is a sleek looking machine. Much like my mother's Cadillac with Northstar and all other featured bells and whistles, I thought the Helix to be the full encompassing Cadillac of bikes without even having to shift.
The fact is that I was raised on motorcycles from about 6 months of age on and shifting was never an issue for me. What possessed me to buy the Helix back in the mid-90's was that I didn't want to go through re-learning how to maneuver the shifting of a big bike again at my age. The Helix seemed to be the answer. What I didn't take into consideration was that this glorified scooter has a one inch longer wheel base than a Honda Goldwing and weighs quite a bit too.
To my surprise I couldn't lift the Helix like I could motorcycles of the 250 cc engine size. At one point, while trying to park the Helix on a hill I managed to nearly dump the bike and struggled for several minutes to get that beast up on its forks to park it.
Since owning the Helix I can honestly say that I would rather put that kind of money into a nice small low riding motorcycle like the Shadow or something like that and at least have a real bike to ride rather than the glory boat of the Helix.
If you're looking for a no effort machine that looks great, than buy a Helix but remember you will still have to obtain a motorcycle endorsement license even though it is a scooter. Licensing is based on the engine size and the speed of the bike and not on the easy way it is to operate it.
For the woman (or man) who doesn't know how to shift and can't appreciate the real ride of a motorcycle, the Helix is a great alternative. For all you bikers out there who have spouses, partners, S.O. who won't ride a bike because they don't know how to shift a motorcycle, then the Helix is just for you.
