I have a 1999 Honda VFR800 Interceptor. It's my third bike, but first new bike that I have purchased. I researched a long time before I decided what I wanted. My research steered me to this bike and convinced it was right for me even though it cost more than I originally wanted to spend on the bike.
The VFR isn't for the boy-racer who wanted ultimate performance and go-speed-racer-go looks. The VFR is a sport-touring bike that you can ride all day long or carve the curves on. The styling of the bike is racy, but not flashing.
After owning the bike for a couple of month now, I must say I'm delighted with my decision. The bike handling is wonderful. The bike's linked brakes system gives you a great deal of piece of mind. The VFRs sporty-yet-comfortable seating position gives you the best of both worlds - great handling and comfort. I've taking the bike on several extended trips and my butt has gotten sore. At first my wrists bothered me on a long trip but after a month of riding the bike, I don't notice this anymore. My previous bike was a standard, so this may explain that issue.
The performance of the bike is great. It's not as fast as many of the pure sports bikes, but you rarely feel wanting for more horsepower. The engine noise and exhaust note, even with the stock muffler, is intoxicating to me. I love the unique sound of the V4 engine.
The quality and feel of the bikes construction and controls are top notch. NO ONE builds a higher quality bike than Honda.
I could not find a negative thing written about the VFR800 that mattered to me. The most common complaint is that the bike it "too perfect" and lacked character. Wow! How many manufacturers would die for complaints like this? How a bike with the VFR looks, sound, and performance could be criticized as lacking character is beyond me. Critics have to find SOMETHING to complain about! The lack of factory luggage options is a non-issue. There are great aftermarket options available that match great.
You could pay more (sometimes 1.5X more!) for bikes from Germany, Italy, or England that are good sport tourers like the VFR, but why? Do yourself a favor and try the VFR800 out.
