| InTheWire's Full Review: 2000 Honda Shadow Spirit |
I have wanted a motorcycle since I became aware such a thing existed. I love motorcycles. I read everything I can find about motorcycles.
For a too-brief time in my life I owned a beautiful pearl yellow and white Honda Shadow VT1100.
It was almost everything I wanted in a motorcycle.
It was gorgeous, assembled with the genuine attention to detail that helps Honda consistently lead the pack in US motorcycle sales.
It was reliable, easy to start, easy to love. I never suffered a single mechanical failure in over 15,000 miles of riding.
Thousand mile days on the interstate, stop and go city driving, sleetstorms, the Texas summer, it didn't matter what I asked of the machine. It did what it was told.
Unfortunately, It never got more than 170 miles to a tank, including reserve, and usually came closer to 150. I see this as a great fault in a bike purchased for riding from state to state.
It never traveled faster than 105 miles per hour, and this is forgivable. I rarely asked it to travel above 85 mph, and then only on a one-time whim.
Economics forced sale, and the march of technology essentially guarantees I'll never own another one.
When I'm ready to again own a motorcycle something better will have come along.
Such is the passage of time.
