Pros: Comfort, range, unique
Cons: weak radio, high revs compared to red-line, no center-stand
The Valkyrie Interstate is the first touring bike I've ever owned. However, I've wanted one for about 5 yrs now. When I found one for $6250 with 24k miles I had to jump on it. I've been riding V65's for about 14 yrs and I still own 3 V65's. The Valkyrie is a powerful bike but when I get on it after riding a V65 it still feels slow. My Valkyrie is running about 90mph at 4k rpm with a redline on 6500, while my V65 Sabre (old touring bike) is running 95mph at 5k rpm with a 10k redline. So, I feel a little more comfortable running the V65 at prolonged high speed than the Valkyrie. My Valkyrie also has aftermarket pipes, and while they are not crazy loud they are louder than I'm used to and louder than what I would hope for on a touring bike, but I may switch back to stock pipes when I can afford it later. I'm also not crazy about the fact the bike has no center-stand. For the price of the bike brand new a center-stand should have been included. First bike I've owned without one. My final complaint with the bike is the sound from the stereo. At highway speeds its just not loud enough. This could be because of the sound from the pipes however. Now that I have gotten past these things let me tell you that I do love the bike. First, it's the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. The bike is just as comfortable for 2 as it is for one. I can't even tell a passenger is on the bike because of how spacious the seat is. I also love the range of the bike. Although the mpg isn't the best (34-36 mpg) the 6.9 gallon tank more than makes up for it. I also love how smooth the engine is. Although I think the bike revs a little to high, you could never tell if it didn't have a tach. At 80 you can't even tell it's running. Although the speakers could be stronger I do like the fact that the bike has a plug in for an MP3 player and if it's not too windy I can hear music up to about 70mph. I also love the way the bike handles. I think it handles as well as my V65's. Finally, the bike is a real head turner. Like the V65 I don't see Valkyrie interstates very often. It's nice to ride something kind of rare. This is a great bike for 2 up riding or big mile touring trips, but I must say I'm glad it's not my only bike. Not to say I don't love it but it's just made for a certain kind of riding.
