| scuttle's Full Review: 2000 Honda XR50R |
We purchased this Bike last fall and we have had more fun from it than from any other investment we have made. It seems a little pricey for a gift for a child, but the hours of enjoyment our son has received was worth every penny. It is a very reliable and stout little motorcycle. It will carry a grown man but can be handled by the smallest of children. The thing I liked the best, was that we could use the throttle govern to keep the bike at a very slow speed until our son was able to handle the bike. Which I must say, I was surprised that after only a few trips around the yard he was able to ride very well. The bike is very easy to balance and seems even easier to control than a bicycle. They even offer training wheels that can be used until you feel safe letting your little one take off on his own. The size is perfect for an average 5-6 year old, balancing is no problem. The bikes are easy to start and never fail to run like a top.
On one tank of gas you can have hours on top of hours of fun and the noise level is much less than that of a lawn mower. I was afraid that the noise of a motorcycle racing back and forth would be too much, but these little machines are quiet and have never even disturbed the livestock that we raise.
They are tough and stand up to the punishment that a child can dish out, whether it be from parking them haphazardly and they turn over, or running over things, they can take the bumps and come out without a scratch.
I found that there is a tire that is made that gives a little better traction than the one that comes on this motorcycle, but for $20.00 you can be set up to ride in even the worst conditions. I have since learned that adults are having a great time racing these little bikes, and they are so tough they stand up well even under those conditions.
The motor on this XR50 is the same motor that Honda has been using for decades and it simply can not be beat. They have the horsepower and they will absolutely last forever. I would recommend this motorcycle to anyone. Girls, boys, moms, and dads, this is the one of you want if you want to get involved in off road riding.
You always want to purchase a helmet before allowing your child to ride, but Honda helps with this too, as most of the time they offer " Bonus Bucks " which average between $150.00 to $200.00 when you purchase these motorcycles new. This can be used to purchase any equipment you need to use when you are riding your motorcycle. I think that says a lot about a company that understands that you might not buy a helmet otherwise.
