If you want to teach your kid how to ride, and don't want them getting into trouble, then the Ninja 250R might be a good way to go. Let's face it, I know I drove Mom's car like a moron when I was 15 and she wasn't around, and I know I don't want MY kid to ride a bike like I do (ever) until he lears how to ride very well, so it would be really stupid to get the kid a bike that has any amount of power.
I am not going to degrade the Ninja 250R even though it only weighs about 100 lbs less than my Yamaha R6 and has less than half the engine (gotta throw that in there!)...I will admit that the 250R takes corners very well. That is the most positive thing I can say for it.
Basically it is just too slow for me. I am not going to degrade anyone who buys a 250 to learn how to ride, because that might actually be a smart idea for some people. I have several friends who just would not be able to keep the power band low until they learned how to ride well. For people like that (not to be negative, of course), the 250 is probably a really good way to go.
For ME, on the other hand, I would be really mad right now if I had bought a 250 for my first bike, because I would have outgrown it in about two months and it can be relatively difficult to sell a 250R. I personally think the best way is to buy at least a 600cc bike brand new, and by the time you finish breaking in the engine you should be comfortable enough to start riding a little faster and harder anyway.
But enough about my bike, my personal opinion about the Ninja 250R is that it is a good beginner bike for your kid or or for someone who will not be able to control the power of a bigger bike until they learn to ride. If you have the self control to not fly down the street on 1 wheel the day you buy your first bike, then go with a bigger engine, or you will be buying a new bike within six months anyway.
