The Prairie 400 4x4 has got to be the ultimate pig ATV on the market and I don’t mean that in a bad way either. Kawasaki really did a superb job putting this Quad together giving stop and go riders a fantastic machine to get jobs done quickly while also giving off road purists a bike that will go almost anywhere.
One of the most recent job sites I was involved in had two Prairie 400’s that we used to haul smaller materials to the outer units. My first impression of the Prairie was that it looked like a fat pig with wheels and I wasn’t overly impressed with the way you change gears, a rather awkward looking gearshift along the right side of the quad, either. This feature actually became one of my favorites after riding the bike a few times.
Kawasaki calls the Prairie their “Flagship” ATV, meaning they consider this to be their absolutely best product available to consumers and I would have to agree even though I am more partial to racing quads. The simplicity of riding the Prairie 400 is unmatched I believe, you simply put it in gear and ride. A great feature on the 400 is the electric starter but an even better feature is the easy pull recoil back up in case your starter fails on a cold afternoon.
On more than one occasion when the foreman wasn’t on location I had the opportunity to test out the climbing capabilities of the Kawasaki and I was full impressed with what it could do. It isn’t fast by any means but it is quick, and it does have a lot of power. The 400 climbed over gravel mounds with ease and shifting into low allowed me to climb a hill that the other guys thought it couldn’t.
I wish I knew more about the specifics of the Prairie 400 but my experience comes from roughly only 15-20 hours of riding time on it. I can say that I enjoyed the comfort of the machine but it is designed for only one rider. I also thought that all of the monitoring devices, gas gauge, speedometer, clock, hour meter and twin trip odometers were laid out in an easy to see manner and worked very efficiently. I never had to use the pull start but did once or twice and found it very easy to pull and usually starting the bike in one or two.
From my experience I would highly recommend the Prairie 400 4x4 to ranchers, farmers, or people with large land for a great work vehicle. I would also recommend it to hunters and novice riders because of its stealthy quietness and automatic gearbox. Back woods enthusiasts would probably enjoy this as well.
Good luck with your choice and I hope I could help in some fashion with your decision.
