| bthomson58's Full Review: 2000 Kawasaki Vulcan 750 |
I bought a 2001 Kawasaki 750 Vulcan new from the dealer. Handling and Balance were major factors in the decision to buy the bike. The seat height is great for shorter riders. Women love the fact that they can sit on the bike flatfooted and that the bike does not feel top heavy. One of the big contributing factors adding to the style is that it has a gauge cluster that includes a tach, speedo, gas gauge, and a complement of lights for low oil, headlight beam out, high beam and turn indicators, unlike most bikes that have just a speedo mounted on the gas tank. While I was happy with the bike overall there are mechanical problems that people need to be aware of. Right from the start I had problems with a leaky rear wheel that sprayed oil all over the wheel. The dealer was sympathetic and tried several things before finally pulling the wheel and found a pinched seal right from the factory. That was just the start of the problems. For over a year I complained to more than one dealer about excessive noise coming from the engine. I was told this was "Normal". This was all during the warranty period. Nothing was done to find the source of the problem. Over time the noise got worse, and with only 22,000 miles the dealer pulled the engine and found that 3 out of 4 camshafts had been damaged, along with a cylinder head, and that if it hadn't been checked now even more damage would have occured. Both I and the dealer contacted Kawasaki about it, and was adamatly told "It's out of warranty & we aren't doing anything for it". I explained that it was in warranty when I complained to the dealers about it, and that now they finally find the problem "After" the warranty is up, I consider this a factory defect and was dismayed that Kawasaki won't stand behind their product. The dealer informs me it will cost $3,200.00 to fix which is unreasonable. Both the dealer and Kawasaki themselves say they have never seen this problem before. The bike was also Jetted wrong as is my wifes 2004 750 vulcan, both are running too lean, the dealer is changing the jets on both bikes to curb that problem. I really like the looks & handling of the bike, but am leery of buying another one if this is the way Kawasaki treats their customers.
