| cobeyman's Full Review: 2000 Polaris Sportsman 500 |
In March of 2000 I purchased this ATV and since then it has been impressing me every time I drive it. Lets start from the begining, I can leave this TV sit for many days in below freezing weather and go out, just hit the starter and it will come to life almost instantly, I kid around with my brother by not calling it the starter but the "on" button. It runs fine when cold, I always let it warm up for a few minutes before driving it, so i cant really tell you how good it would do when you hit it at first moments running, I assume it would do fine. The ride it provides is a standard not met by any other ATV I have ever driven, I get this same description from any other guest riders. For a machine this big it really can get moving! From a rolling start of about fifteen MPH I raced with a buddy on a Honda 300 EX and I walked right from him! I dosent know the meaning of hills, I dont think it knows that they are there the way it can carry two 200+ pound men plus me, 145 pounds flying out of a steep revine about three stories high and hard to walk up, I need to lean way forward and milk the throtile to keep the front end down it I want to, even when riding alone(up that hill that is) and most quads would limp up it. Pulls like an ox, hook it up to a fallen tree, spin all 4 at less than half throtile, drag a two ton plus tree accross a field at fifteen MPH. We hooked it up to a S-10 Chevy pickup and it pulled it too! As my earlier passage said you can load it up good! over 400 pounds has been known to ride the rear racks of my ATV with a person on the front to keep it down if I should hit a hill thats too steep. I dont know what the other guy was talking about when he said that it couldnt handle good river crossings, I have have it past the floorboards about a foot, plowing upstreem and it NEVER stalled! I was so confused when I read that! What would make it stall! There is an engine snorkel higher than the rider's seat, that is some sort of crossing, you'd probly get swept away. Anyway it always impressed me, none left to be desired.
