| chopper955's Full Review: 2000 Triumph Daytona 955i |
This is one beautiful motorcycle. I bought one of the first 70 1997 T595s imported into the US. This was the 955's predecessor. The 955 is unique in the sportbike world. It's a triple, not a twin, not a four. It inherits the best qualities of both: lots of low-end torque and a flat powerband that doesn't fall off as the RPMs build. Outstanding brakes. Very neutral steering.
The bike hasn't been without problems. Mine had a cracked frame, a porous injector body, the fan blades melted on the headers, the gas tank leaked, there were two subtley different colors of yellow in the bodywork, the stock Regina chain lasted all of 2500 miles. I've visited all the common warranty problems with the T595s, save the grenading gearbox. I'd like to say that Triumph responded to these complaints quickly but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Parts supplies in the US were very scarce, and still are to some extent. I waited months for some fixes. Since these warranty fixes were made however, the bike has run almost flawlessly.
The 955 is a refinement of the T595 and addressed all of its early problems. But dealer service is still the #1 complaint about Triumph among owners. In its early hungry years, Triumph franchised just about anyone who wanted the marque. That's come back to bite Triumph today. It's impossible in some large cities to find competent Triumph service.
Who should buy this bike? Anyone who wants a classy-looking, great-handling sportbike. Who shouldn't? Anyone who doesn't like a rough ride. Like most sportbikes, 150 miles in the saddle is the duration of most riders' tolerance. There are faster, lighter and cheaper bikes in the liter class. But only the Ducati 916 can rival its looks and sound.
