Pros: Unique looks, great power and excellent handling.
Cons: The seat's a brick. Make that a plank. Not thick enough for a brick.
The Bottom Line: Why be like everyone else? Get the power and handling of a Japanese sport bike but with unique character and looks.

| tbuse's Full Review: 2000 Triumph Speed Triple |
I have a 2000 Triumph Trophy 900, which is a very good sport/touring bike. I wanted to get another bike that would be a combination of city bike, sport bike and naked bike. I got a 2000 Triumph Speed Triple.
The Speed Triple uses the same engine and frame as the Daytona, although the engine has been detuned to give you more mid range punch. Perfect for real world riding. The exposed frame, minimalistic body work & twin round "bug eyed" headlights definitely show that you are not dealing with your cookie cutter "sport bike". The frame is stiff, allowing for excellent handling and control. The engine is the 955i, fuel injected triple, making 108 hp & 76 ft/lb of torque. These figures are easily raised by the addition of a pipe & recalibrating the fuel injection. The fuel injection is crisp & responsive. You better be holding on when you twist that throttle or the bike will leave you behind. The power band is enormous on this bike. Only in 1st and 2d will you want the rpms to drop below 3000, but between there & the 9500 rpm redline is a wonderful and joyous place. You can easily go through the twisties without changing gears, the power band is that wide. The immediate power is an essential in motoring through the urban jungle. When the Q-Tip in the Buick wants to take your lane, a quick twist of the wrist & you're out of the way.
The ergonomics of this bike are pretty good too. The Speed Triple is made for real sized people. The seat to bar to peg relationship is pretty good for this type of bike. The gauges are very good. An easily read speedometer, tach and water temperature gauge grace the dash, as well as "idiot lights" for turn signals, high beams, low fuel, oil temperature, neutral and engine warning.
Like every bike I've ever owned, I want to change some things. I hate the seat. It's thin & hard. A Corbin is on the way. The bike came with the fly screen & I like it. The rear seat will be replaced with a cowl, the bars will be raised an inch and the pipe will be changed. There's nothing wrong with the old pipe, but I want a little more noise.
On the whole, I really like this bike. It meets my needs on many different levels. It's not like everyone else's, yet it delivers on performance, handling & looks. Being different can be a good thing.
