| mritts's Full Review: 2000 Vespa ET4 150 |
An opportunity came along to buy a very slightly used Vespa ET4, one with only 290 miles on it. I couldn't resist, as I owned a Vespa 150 in the 1960's. The ET4 is first-rate --quiet, plenty powerful, beautiful to look at. I am completely delighted with it. Despite the small tires (compared with a motorcycle), it's remarkably stable, with a very effective adjustable suspension. It has a confidence-inspiring security system too, with an electronically encoded ignition key of the sort found in some upscale cars. The top speed is reputedly 70 miles per hour, and I don't doubt it. I have had it up to about 55. It accelerates briskly and is certainly as fast or faster off the line than most automobiles. I always feel as though I have plenty of power in reserve.
I briefly considered the new Yamaha Vino and the coming Honda Metropolitan, but both have only 50cc engines, and in southern California traffic, I consider that borderline. Now that I took the plunge and spent substantially more money on the Vespa, I'm certain I made the right decision. It's very much worth the price; truly in a class by itself.
