| DAHengineer's Full Review: 2000 Yamaha Road Star |
I was on a motorcycle from the time I was a small kid, until I went into the Military at the age of 20. I actually got a class M drivers license before I was licensed to drive a car. After 16 years of being off of two wheels, I finally gave in to "The Itch". I'm an Engineer and a natural born gear head, so I had to get technical with everything currently on the market. There are many nice bikes out there, but the Road Star was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted another big road bike that was simple enough to maintain myself, but reliable enough to provide many years of motoring down the road. I'm extremely familiar with the good ole' push rod V-Twin motor, and its low end torque and simplicity. This time I wanted one that I could put 15,000 miles a year on and not spend every weekend working on it. (Been There, Done That...........twice) The Road Star is extremely well engineered. The ceramic alloy cylinder liners are a lot like those used in piston aircraft engines for heat distribution and long wear. The crank shaft counterweights are massive and provide great engine balance. At 2,250 Rpm it puts out about 99 ft/lbs. of torque, which is plenty of power in the right place. The rev limiter kicks in at about 4,000 Rpm which in my opinion, is a good thing. If you've ever over-revved a V-Twin and bent the valves by having them float and hit each other, you'll know what I'm saying. The gear box works smoothly, without falling between gears. The chassis geometry is great. It handles like a dream. Most bikes of like style and weight need to be herded down the road. You point them in the general direction and hope for the best. Anybody that rides a motorcycle a lot will appreciate the Yamaha Road Star. I've got a couple of friends who have sold their "Brand H" bikes and picked up Road Stars after riding mine. I've had it about 3 weeks and have almost 1,600 miles on it. I ride almost everywhere I go.
