| dp20082's Full Review: 2000 Yamaha TT-R125 |
Living on a farm I demand a lot from a bike. I expect it to run in the coldest of winter to the hottest of summer. At any time day or night. In mud, rain, snow, or dust. You can get the picture. Enter the Yamaha TW200.
I took over the T-Dub, as it is so affectionately called, when I was in sixth grade. It had a little under 2000 miles, in virtually new condition. Now, seven years later, it has over 12,000 miles and is not even a spitting image of what it used to be. Yes I took the bike to battle and it came out on top. I jumped it off small cliffs, jumped it at the local track, and rode it to work every day. Now both of my front fork seals are blown, I don't have a taillight because I wheelied over, both mirrors are broken, and I don't have a front fender. However, it still runs like a charm.
Now I know you don't want to hear my life story. I just wanted to set the stage to show you what this "Little Engine That Could" can do. Now I will proceed to give you some vital information.
Engine
The engine is a 200cc air cooled four stroke and a good one. They will go forever if you change the oil every four months and keep the air filter clean. It has great torque too. I take it out in the hills, put it in first gear, and it will go up about anything I would ever want to go up. Also it has great engine braking. By this I mean the ability to keep the speed down when going down hills.
Sound
Another bonus is not being annoying like the loud two strokes.
Weight
The T-Dub could use some Jenny Craig. They weigh in at 262 pounds. If you ever have a tip over you feel the strain in picking it up. However, when riding the bike it is not as noticeable.
Price
You can purchase a TW200 new for about $3799. If you want info visit yamaha-motor.com However, I would recommend getting a used one. This due to the fact that they have been basically unchanged since they were unveiled in the late 80's. This lets you know the success of the bike. It has been a moneymaker for Yamaha with a cult following of farmers and campers. Make sure it has only gone through one set of tires. The bike takes forever to go through a set of tires. I finally changed mine at 10,000 miles but I wouldn't recommend taking that long. Also make sure the mileage is low. Anything under 5000 miles is awesome. You can probably find a good used one for about $1500-$2500,
Comfort
I consider electric start to be a comfort issue. Yes, the TW has that magic little button as well as the handy kickstart backup. The bike sports a wide comfortable motocross inspired seat. Also, foot pegs so you can take someone along for the ride. The bike can be a rougher ride than some other bikes I have ridden. However, it doesnt take away from the bikes worth. On the dash of the bike there is a handy panel that shows when you are in neutral, using your blinkers, and even using your high beam. How handy is that.
On the farm all we will buy is T-Dubs. They are the most dependable bike that I have ever come across. If your purpose in buying one is to have an awesome performance machine you should be wary. These are just a great all around bike for the money.
Good luck in your bike shopping. I know you can't go wrong with a T-Dub. If you have any questions about any type of dirt bike feel free to email me. I enjoy answering your questions.
