| George_Chabot's Full Review: 2000 Yamaha V Star Classic |
My 1999 Yamaha V Star Classic is a bike that looks much larger than its 650cc engine would suggest. It has the look and feel of classic motorcycles of the '40s and '50s, you know, the knucklehead and panhead cruisers everybody longs for. Well, the V Star is the only one that captured the flavor, exactly . The others (even HD!) have tried to get that look and feel but none have done better than Yamaha.
The bike has what appears to be a rigid frame, which adds to its low, lean appearance. It actually has a monoshock to take up the bumps and it's adjustable by removing the seat.
Power is put to the rear wheel by a shaft drive, which makes it nicer than a chain or belt, nothing to snag, or wear out, or adjust.
The bike is detailed with smooth welds, polished engine cases, and chrome accents, altogether making an understated, yet luxurious impression on the beholder. The two tone paint job, in my case green and white, is flawless on the tank and fenders, and it set above an equally good gloss black on the frame.
The 650cc powerplant develops plenty of power even for two-up riding. The five speed transmission allows good aceleration and low speed maneuverability.
This cruiser is really a fun bike to ride. More times than I can remember, guys have approached me and complimented me on my Harley :).
The funny thing is, I paid about 30% of what a similarly equipped Harley costs! I love it!
