| jeffs320's Full Review: 2000 Yamaha YZF-R6 |
I was recently looking to purchase my first sport bike, and a friend recommended that I look at the R6. At first I was hesitant, because I had never heard of it before, unlike the more common Honda CBR F4. But I decided to take my friend's opinion and try riding his buddy's R6.
For anyone that owns or has ridden the R6, it should be no suprise that I completely forgot about the F4 immediately. The starting price was the same, and although I could have saved about $500 by purchasing the F4, over the course of 5 year that is less than $10 per month difference!
Riding the R6 stock compared to an F4 stock is like driving a Porche and then driving a Miata. Although the Miata is a nice car, and it is not too slow, it is nothing compared to the Porche! Same deal here...the F4 is a nice bike and it is not slow, but compared to the R6...you get the point!
I would say that anyone who wants to race should look into the R6. The cornering is smooth and flawless, and although the lower end of the powerband is not it's strong point, you can take it up to 15,500 before red-lining! Between 11 and 14 grand is where this monster of a 600 gets it's power, with about 96 HP at the wheel stock, and weighing in at just about 400 lbs wet, it really moves!
I would have to say it is not a beginner's bike, although it all depends on the person. It is extremely easy to get carried away with the power of this bike and get stupid on it, so I recommend it for at least slightly experienced riders.
