| cozzie's Full Review: 2000 Yamaha YZF-R6 |
The R6 is a marvel in engineering. I bought my black and silver UK bike in march 1999..although i had a pretty good idea of what to expect nothing could have prepared me for the complete satisfaction of owning a YZF.
This bike ooozzees confidence out of you..the handling and standard suspension setup is better than any bike i have rode, it feels like your tyres are made of Velcro and the roads are made of wool encouraging you to dump the bike on it's side further and further. The bikes light weight chassis is truly amazing posing no problem flicking the bike into a series of twisties giving you total satisfaction whenever you ride..take into account the steering thats so sharp you can cut yourself, you have got the basics of a very succesful bike.....add the 100bhp engine, the R1 braking system and you just got yourself the recipe for serious fun. Although the engine is like a wet sponge below 6000rpms the bike is like a volcano waiting to erupt with power once you hit the 8000revs it comes into the back wheel like someone kicked you in the back and can catch you out if you are not carefull..hence why gear selection is paramount when riding this bike near it's limit. Like a 250 you have to keep it on the boil hovering around 6-8k revs or else you will be pretty frustrated coming out of corners stamping on the gear selector calling yourself all the names under the sun, but get it right and i can guarantee you will be searching for the next lot of left and right handers to put this bike through it's paces.
If you like working a bike hard then this is definatley the bike for you, the complete package is uncomparble with any other 600cc on the market even down to it's neat looks tidy appearance and foxy headlights, this bike turns heads. Some people reckon it's a girls bike because of it's small frame and size......but go and ride one and you will find out what a real animal of a machine this is.
Since buying mine i have added an ART race can onto it which really sounds the dogs danglies and is often mistaken for a much bigger bike although it does not sound ridiculously loud. It also adds about 10 bhp down at the bottom end which really improves the bikes performance..it looks cool too and does not cost a great deal either.
Finally, the R6 deserves the utmost respect it can quite easily tag on to your R1's ZX9R's etc down your favourite twisty roads and has definatley earned it's place on the road. In the Uk the R6 has been the best selling Bike since it's launch in '98 and has even outsold the R1....does that alone not tell you something. But do not forget when you order yours invest in a quality pair of leathers, a decent helmet and gloves....and last but not least some life insurance.
Have fun and be safe...
