| mikeburm's Full Review: 2001 Suzuki Katana 750 |
I bought my 2001 750 Suzuki Katana new in July 2001. It's just my second motorcycle, so I don't have a lot to compare to, but I'll give you my impressions based on my limited experience.
First off, I love the styling. I've seen some reviews that say the Katana's styling is a little "out there". While I agree that it does look different, to me that's a good thing. Too many sport bikes look too much alike. I do call it a sport bike, but in actuality, it's more of a sport/tourer. That leads to my second point, comfort. It's a very comfortable bike to ride for long periods of time due maily to its more upright riding position which puts less strain on your wrists. You can lay down on the tank when you need to, but you're not forced to ride hunched forward like on most true sport bikes. It also has lower footpegs placed further forward than on most sportbikes. That's bad for clearance if you plan on doing any "knee-dragging", but it's good for taller riders like me. Since it uses previous-generation GSXR engines, it's way down on power compared to a 750 GSXR, but it will still get up and go. Just be aware that you'll have trouble keeping up with your friends' GSXR's and CBR's if you go group riding.
To date, I've only put a couple of thousand miles on it, but other than regular maintenance, there's been no issues. All in all, I'd classify this as a great bike for anyone (even a farily new rider like me) that wants a pretty fast bike with sport bike looks and touring bike comfort rolled into one machine.
