First let me say that I do not own this ATV. My uncle does however and I feel that I have ridden his enough to qualify for writing this review.
The 2001 Yamaha Big Bear 400 4x4 has a fairly large sized fuel tank with a 4 gallon capacity. This allows for days and weeks of riding on just one full tank. We went riding for the weekend and we rode for about 23 hours and used about 3/4 of a full tank. Now, when you consider that not many people put 23 hours or more of riding in a week, and some people don't even ride that much in a month, that is a lot of riding on a little gas. Also, on top of the fuel tank this is also a fuel gauge which isn't available on a lot of 4-wheelers.
The Big Bear is a big 4-wheeler. This can be both good and bad. With it being big and 4-wheel drive, it has lots of power. It will go almost anywhere you could possibly imagine from seat high mud to knee deep snow. However, being big can make it slow, and in this case, it does just that. While it has all that power, it is incredibly slow. Even though you can go where others may not, you will be left behind if you get out on clear trails. Also, being big can make it more dangerous if it were to flip over on you.
This ATV has a high ground clearance with 9.7 inches. This allows for superb terrainability. With this much room between the bottom of the motor and the ground, you don't have to worry about hitting the the motor on just about anything. You can run over logs, up rocks, through creek beds and not even scrape the bottom of it. This also helps give it more stability when going up hills and over rocks and logs.
The Big Bear also has great handling. The steering is nice and light, allowing for a tighter, class leading, turning radius. It can easily be maneuvered into any area, no matter how unstable, rocky, or slanted the ground is. The independent double wishbone front suspension and single rear shock make for an everlasting enjoyable ride. I rode on it for 9 hours and the only thing I found wrong was that my pants were wet from all of my sweat.
This ATV is very reliable. It has never given up and always just kept on going. My uncle was riding it and flipped it backwards climbing a hill, and when he got up, he just tipped it back over on its wheels and we drove off like it was nothing. All that was left was a few scratches. It also keeps going when completely submerged which is very nice when you want to ride in creeks or in deep mud.
Other than it being slow, there isn't anything I can think of that is wrong with this 4-wheeler. The 2001 Yamaha Big Bear 400 4x4 has got more than enough power to satisfy anyone. With its 4-wheel drive, high ground clearance, and excellent price, I highly recommend this big, bad, bear.
